Girls’ basketball in the state of Oklahoma is generating a lot of excitement as we approach the state championships! The area championship takes place from February 28th, 2019 to March 2, 2019. Teams are competing in the second round of playoffs in order to advance to state. The playoffs are double elimination, therefore one loss does not end a chance to move on to the state tournament. On the topic of losses, there has been many thrilling upsets in Oklahoma girls basketball! In two days of Area tournament playoffs there have been 15 upsets from class 6A to class A.
<strong>El Reno Defeats Ardmore</strong>
Ardmore reigned supreme the majority of season as the #1 seed in class 5A while El Reno ended regular season being ranked #10. To start the game, El Reno came out hot going on a 12-0 run in the beginning of the first quarter. The 1<sup>st</sup>quarter ended with El Reno having 21 points vs Ardmore having 10 points. Nonetheless, Ardmore kicked back in to gear by adjusting their defense and outscoring El Reno 10-5 to end the 1<sup>st </sup>half (26-20 score). Both teams seemed to make defensive adjustments at the half which raised the intensity levels. Ardmore picked up their defense with high-tempo pressure and by causing El Reno’s top player, <strong>Kiera Davis</strong>, to have to sit on the bench in foul trouble the majority of the 3<sup>rd</sup>. On the other side, El Reno made adjustments to shut down Ardmore’s top players, #23 <strong>Sierra Gordon</strong> and #24 <strong>Amaya Gordon,</strong> by only allowing each to finish the game with 6 points. El Reno’s defensive adjustments held Ardmore to just 8 points in the 3<sup>rd </sup>quarter meanwhile they were still able to score effectively. In the 4<sup>th </sup>quarter El Reno went on a 15-0 run with the help of <strong>Kiera Davis</strong> being back in the game after foul trouble. El Reno won the rebound battle and ultimately made more shots to win the game by 14 points and upset the #1 seed in 5A.
