Continue ReadingAs we continue our AAU previews, we are going class-by-class in search of potential breakout seasons. This isn’t going to be based on AAU program, but rather five players who we think could either breakout or have a great year. A breakout can happen in many ways, grabbing your first DI offer, committing to an NAIA school after a flurry of solid tournaments, or quite simply just playing better than you ever have. While there are going to be quite a few breakout summers due to the sheer talent of players in the state, we are talking five players who we think could have the biggest breakout. Next up, the 2020 wings.
Jaedon Murphy – 5’10 W – North Polk HS – Kingdom Hoops
Murphy is setting up for her last season on the circuit. After a solid year for her in high school, she will be looking to carry that momentum over to AAU. Murphy is one of those players who does it all averaging 14.3 points a game, as well as 6.5 rebounds per game. She also averaged two blocks, a steal, and an assist per game this past season. I think that she is very overlooked player who can really do it all at a high level. Murphy isn’t a player who’s going to go out and score 25 points a game, but rather score the ball at a high percentage while getting her teammates involved as well. I think that as she gets out in front of college coaches this summer her stock is going to climb.
Shateah Wetering – 5’11 W – Montezuma HS – All Iowa Attack
Wetering has already committed to Iowa University, but we think that she is in store for a huge summer. After averaging 18.9 points a game last season, there is even more room to grow. She is a gritty, do-it-all wing for Montezuma. Playing up with the top All Iowa Attack team will do her game wonders this season. Wetering is a good rebounder and defender as she led her team in rebounds and steals this past season. Once her perimeter shooting starts to click, she is going to be tough to stop. Look for Wetering to have a breakout season and be one of the top players on her team. Lots of untapped potential here in her game.
Grace Plummer – 5’10 W – Valley HS – Beyond Ball
Plummer is a very solid wing who stepped up this past year and played well for Valley. She is a tremendous threat from behind the arc and can really light it up when she gets hot. Plummer is a tough nosed and gritty defender and her length could cause a lot of problems. It always seemed that she was on the cusp of a breakout, and this AAU season I fully expect her to break out and cause havoc. She is such a solid all-around player on both sides of the ball that coaches are going to be very intrigued with her game. As she looks to be one of the top contributors for her high school team next year, Plummer is going to start gaining a lot of attention this summer.
Katelyn Stanley – 5’8 W – Bishop Heelan HS – SD Attack
Stanley is the lone player on this list that is playing outside of the state of Iowa. She played very well last year in the state tournament and that success will set her up for a huge season this year. Stanley is a player who takes advantage of others mistakes and capitalizes on them. Improving her handling skill will be key for her this summer as during this upcoming high school season she’ll have the ball in her hand a bit more than in the past. Love her ability to score the ball and run the floor in transition. This is going to be a big summer for her and I think that her recruiting is getting ready to take off.
Anna Deets – 5’8 W – Mason City HS – All Iowa Attack
Deets had a very solid school ball season as she was the second-leading scorer on a team that made it to the semi-finals of the state tournament. Megan Meyer is off to Iowa, so Deets is going to be counted on to do most of the scoring this coming year. A big thing that I’ll be looking for is her ability to get to the basket off the dribble. We know that Deets is a shooter, but this upcoming season we are going to want to see her get to the basket and finish at the rim. She’s going to be the driving force next season behind Mason City. Deets has always been a fun player to watch but over the next 10 months she is going to play the best basketball of her life.
