Over the next few days, I will look back at some of the top players that I saw. I clearly didn’t see every team, as they had over 200 in attendance, but I did see close to 50 teams in action. Today, a look at some of the key forward and centers who caught my eye with some outstanding play.
Madeline Westbeld, 6-2 Sports City U- Madeline settled any debates on who the top 2020 player in Ohio. The 6-foot-2 small forward showed that she can do anything she wants out on the floor. From the perimeter, Westbeld can easily and consistently score from the three, she can put the ball on the floor, shoot the midrange, and get by her defender and score at the rim. She is long and athletic, a major force on the boards, can alter and block shots on defense, and is a very smart player on the court. Good footwork in the paint.
Megan Leraas, 5-10, Dayton Metro Painter- impressive small forward who can score either from the perimeter or in the paint. Nice handles and can move without the ball. Actually hit a game winner in one of her games from beyond the arc. Quick shot with deep range. Can also get to the rim and score with contact. Hard working defender always trying to get better.
Emina Selimovic, 5-11, Lady’s 1st Cleveland- I was familiar with Emina after seeing her in a Pittsburgh event earlier in the month. She moved well after just playing one game since she returned fully from an ACL injury. Moves well, active and runs the floor well. Really had good moves in the paint, and a drop step that was impressive. Can rebound well, and is a good athlete who always worked hard when she was in the game.
Sofia Gentile, 6-1, Ohio Lady Hoopsters Elite 20/21- I was impressed with how hard she worked when she was on the floor. Once she established position in the paint, she does a good job sealing off her defender to score. Solid rebounder and a strong player. Good potential toward getting to the next level.
Journey Blevins, 6-0, SMAC Central Ohio Hockman- an impressive power forward who is a true post player. She has a nice shot, and shoots it high making it difficult to defend. She has good toughness and is a rebounding machine.
Makenzie Wilson, 6-0, Team 419 – long athletic kid who gets great position with her back to the basket. Good hands and can run the floor well. Can defend in the paint or step outside and score. Good court instincts and reaction to the ball. Can rebound and has a soft touch around the rim.
Ally Winnen, 6-1, TNBA Ohio- great footwork and athletic, she was really impressive in the one half that I saw her. A physical player who can rebound and score in the paint. Good movement without the ball.
