Carroll County, part of the Canton-Massillon metropolitan area, was named for Charles Carroll of Carrollton – the last surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence. There are only 3 high school girls basketball programs in Carroll County (Carrollton, Conotton Valley, Malvern), but between the 3 schools, there are certainly some girls basketball players for Ohio fans to keep an eye on.
Let’s take a look at a number of talented underclassmen from Carroll County.
Malina Moore – Carrollton – Class of 2020
Moore is an undersized forward for Carrollton – who will probably need to produce the bulk of the offensive production during the 2019-2020 season. She has a nice package of post moves on the block and goes to her up-and-under more often than not. She can shoot the mid-range J and even step out and connect on a 3-pointer occasionally if left open.
Abby Laizure – Carrollton – Class of 2021
Laizure is a very good 3-point shooter who can catch fire in a hurry. She is definitely on the smaller end of the spectrum for guards, but is best suited playing off of the ball, as her catch-and-shoot game is outstanding. She is a good FT shooter.
Maggie Bower – Conotton Valley – Class of 2020
Bower is a tweener with good hands. She finishes well around the rim with both hands and does a solid job of making hard one-dribble moves to the basket in half-court or on the catch in transition. She will step out and shoot the 3 – although her release is not the most fluid at this point.
Sydney Lyon – Conotton Valley – Class of 2020
Lyon is one of the more natural “basketball players” in Carroll County when you watch her on the court. Sydney is a very active defender – who causes havoc and creates turnovers with deflections and steals – leading to offensive opportunities for her in the open floor. She has a nice runner/floater package and is also a solid 3-point shooter.
Hope Whaley – Malvern – Class of 2020
There were nights when Whaley scored over 50% of her team’s points. She is a good athlete who has experienced success in other sports and it’s easy to see that athleticism translate to the basketball court. Hope does a number of things – aside from scoring the basketball, as she is a good rebounder, creates scoring opportunities for her teammates and defends hard.
