Saturday’s Midwest Showdown featured several teams from across the United States. Some prospects were under the radar players while others clearly had D1 talent. In the first article recapping the event, I look at the top 5 scorers from the event as several players showed they could score the basketball at a high level.
MicKayla Perdue (2021) WV Thunder 2021- Springfield
Arguably one of the best scoring threats any time she comes on the floor, Perdue again had a great outing for WV Thunder last weekend. Able to run the floor and get up and down quickly, she excelled in fast break opportunities and found herself finishing with both hands. MicKayla was able to get into the paint several times off the dribble drive with an explosive first step and her soft touch around the rim made it very rare that she missed shots.
Madison Booker (2023) AL Southern Starz 2023- Germantown
I would argue Booker was the best prospect on display during the entire weekend. A 6 foot forward, Booker has tremendous size and had a clear size advantage against her opponents throughout the day Saturday. Obviously, she can score around the rim, but Booker has a very quick release on her jump shot making her difficult to guard up to free throw line extended. She is a high-level player already ahead of the curve for a freshman and should be considered one of the top players to watch in Alabama.
Keiara Griffin (2020) AL Southern Starz 2020- Ramsay
When it comes to athleticism at the Forward position, Griffin is one of the best. She is a lengthy 3 able to score in the paint through traffic, or off the perimeter. She has quick feet and has the speed to beat defenders off the dribble if not contained. Physical with the basketball in her hands, Keiara used her athleticism to specifically dominate on the glass as an elite rebounder.
Laila Phelia (2021) Cincinnati Angels Blue- Mount Notre Dame
One of the most aggressive guards I saw during the day, Lalia has an explosive first step that created problems for defenders. The most impressive part of her game was the ability to score in the paint through defenders. She knew to keep her head up and play through contact instead of avoiding it and as a result, was able to score at a very high level.
Kailee Davis (2021) Michigan Crossover EYBL- Renaissance
I got to see Davis play in both the 16U and 17U games for Michigan Crossover. Overall she is a very talented point guard. A floor general that takes the lead in starting the half court offense, Davis has a nice offensive game and very nice range. She pulls up from near college range and demands respect from opposing defenses as a result.
