Over the next few days, I will take a look at some players who performed very well at the right time…the live viewing period.
Today, a look at a pair of Dayton (OH) area guards who are already pretty well known around the Buckeye state after helping their high school team to consecutive state championships during their first two years of high school.
Ivy Wolf Ivy Wolf 5'8" | PG Minster | 2021 State OH and Janae Hoying, both 2021 kids, are the starting backcourt for Minster High School, the back-to-back Ohio state Division Four champions. They are also in the backcourt for the Dayton Lady Hoopstars Premier team who traveled to Milwaukee during the live period and played in the USJN Windy City Classic.
Wolf, who led the team in scoring at the event, saw her stock rise with some outstanding play against the players who are considered the best in the country. Ivy didn’t back down to anyone, and proved she can go toe-to-toe with the proclaimed best. An outstanding guard with a lot of intangibles. She can put the ball on the floor and get to the rim to score, or separate herself from the defense and bury the long-range perimeter shot beyond the arc.
Ivy also showed she is tough to defend in the open court, with the ability to lead the break, find the better shot with a lead pass, or stop and pop the pullup jumper. Some coaches may to realize that while she may not be the fastest kid, or the best shooter, she has intangibles it takes to help their program, such as grit and toughness. She does have nice speed, can drain the three, along with doing something that is the sole purpose for bringing in a recruit…. she just wins.
Hoying is another kid who has always flown under the radar, but after a very solid experience in Milwaukee, that may not be possible anymore. Those in Ohio know her as “big game Janae” according to her AAU coach Matt Madges, as she had her two biggest high school games on the biggest stage. Now it is time for her to expand her skill development onto the national stage.
Janae has always been known as a player who can score from the perimeter. Deadly from beyond the arc, and her confidence has improved as her game has improved. Like Ivy, an incredible attitude and work ethic. Her court awareness and savvy has really grown, and she has quick hands on defense which leads to turnovers.
She is a great leader and an intelligent player. Like Wolf, she played well and showed that even through both play at a small-time school, they have bigtime talent.
