Hutchinson Community College hosted a varsity and jayvee team camp at the Hutchinson Sports Arena June 19-20. Attending for a substantial portion of day two I enjoyed the opportunity to see some notable players playing with their high school teammates. I also got a glimpse of up-and-coming players likely to make an impact for their schools.

Madie McCoy, 2020, 5'7, G/F, Wellsville - McCoy was the lone senior to play with a small squad that included three 2023s among a group of underclassmen. Solidly built, she showed good defensive court awareness and interior competitiveness. A three point threat she gets her teammates involved well with her passing ability. She needs to improve her vertical to strengthen her jump shot and ability to rebound. McCoy was a KBCA 1A honorable mention all-state and a first team Pioneer League selection in 2019.
Bethany Pearson, 2022, 5'6", PG, Wellsville - Pearson's ability to run the point enabled McCoy to work the 2-4 positions. Showed good smarts running the team. Has good speed, solid quickness on defense, can dribble-drive and dish, and showed three point range.

Brittney Byers, 2020, 5'6", PG/2, South Haven - Byers showed good ability to elevate and in the use of a floater to score with in the lane off the drive. She also scored with a scoop shot when anticipating contact on a drive. Fundamentals need sharpen all-around but the talent is there. Byers was a South Central Border first team all-league selection in 2019. She averaged 17.3 ppg and 3 spg.

Ava Jones, 2023, 6'0", PF, Nickerson - Good size, length, and athleticism. Showed a good up-and-under move, the ability to catch and turn to hit the jumper from mid-lane, and that she's a good free throw shooter. Has a tendency to hold the ball too low inside and struggles at times playing against active, shorter defenders.
