5 Players to Watch:
(schools are as of last year – unless PGH is 100% certain that a player has enrolled elsewhere)
Karli Anker – Manchester
Taylor Leedy – Tuslaw
McKayla Feikert – Triway
Emily Cole – Fairless
Sydnie Pearce- CVCA
4 Thoughts:
Orrville has had an outstanding run in the PAC. However, they have to replace nearly all of their production from last season’s championship run – as well as their head coach. As Mikala Carpenter, Shadra Hamsher and Mariah Goodard have all moved on – the Red Riders will start pre-season practices with a young team, led by Tamara Turner, Allyson Amstutz, Katie Troyer and Amari Slaughter.
Tuslaw will also need to replace some big-time production, with Majestic Sales now playing basketball at Walsh University. With Taylor Leedy, Peyton Stewart and Emma Koons back, the Mustangs do have more production returning than their league rivals at Orrville.
Akron Manchester has who many would peg to be the top player in the league in Karli Anker, however – the rest of the Panthers are relatively unexperienced and will need to show that they can win big games consistently on the road if they are a legitimate championship contender. Junior Haley Webb, Sophomore Emma Stamperd and Freshman Rylee Bennett are two kids that are more than capable of helping Anker score the basketball.
CVCA lost 2 all-league seniors to graduation (Lauren Davis; 17 PPG, Autumn Foguth; 9 PPG), but they have added a number of transfers to the program, including Sydnie Pearce and Sydney Marshall from Green, as well as Becca Stahl from Manchester – all of whom played big minutes for their previous schools. As the roster is finalized and area basketball fans learn more about CVCA – there should be clarity as to just how good this team can be.
3 Big Games:
Northwest @ CVCA on December 21st
Triway @ Orrville on December 28th
Tuslaw @ Manchester on January 8th
2 Fun Facts:
Maggie Summers is the new head coach at Orrville – a program that she knows very well. Maggie graduated as the all-time assist leader at OHS (a record that was broken by Shadra Hamsher last winter) and was the point guard when the team made a run to the state Final 4 for head coach Mark Alberts Sr. in 2013.
Northwest also has a new coach – Kevin Lower. A graduate of Northwest – where his dad Jim led the boys program for 20 years and his brother Mike is the current boys boss – Kevin was previously the head boys coach at Tuslaw, coincidentally also in the PAC-7. While at Tuslaw, Lower led the Mustang boys to a district championship in 2014-2015 and an undefeated regular season in 2015-2016.
