Everyone knows the typical teams who every year, will be competitive and in contention for their league title and beyond, but each year, there are also some teams who raise their game and catch everyone off guard from the year before.
In the Dayton area, there are some teams who I think could open some eyes as the season progresses.
Fairborn- with a new coaching staff and another year of solid experience, the Skyhawks could make some noise in the Miami Valley League this season. Notable alumni Brooklyn (Pumroy) Summitt takes over a team with several talented returning players to lead the way. Last year, they just missed finishing .500 on the season, and they return an impressive junior point guard Jodee Austin, who continues to improve her game. Also, sophomore Natalie Oktavec improved throughout her freshman season and finished strong last year. Khala Powell hopes to get back on the court soon, recovering from an ACL injury.
Chaminade Julienne- another team who finished below .500 last season, with a good chance to improve on that during this season. They are led by good senior leadership from the likes of Courtney Redd, Jordyn Varise, Staci Greene and Eve Monaghan, all four players who could have a chance to continue their playing career at the next level. I was impressed over the summer with incoming freshman Kennedy Gadson, who could make an impact this season with the Eagles. They were 9-14 last season, and while Carroll is the favorite again in the GCL Coed, CJ will have to improve their game to compete now that the league is combined into one division.
Indian Lake- the Lakers return a lot of talent from a team that finished 10-13 last season. They return their entire top right from last year, and all into the mix Allison Kinney, a very talented freshman who will make an immediate impact. Kristen Young is their top returning scorer, but together they only averaged 38 points per game last year. Kinney should help that, and the Lakers hope to challenge for the CBC Mad River Division this season,
Sidney- they have nowhere to go but up. The Yellow Jackets finished 0-23 last year, and return their top scorer in Samantha Reynolds, who will get a lot of help from some younger kids. Lexee Brewer and Allie Stockton are both incoming freshman players who will make an immediate impact on the success of Sidney this season. It is a process and their new coaching staff along with the talented young kids will get them turned around.
