It is really hard to tell who will step up right from the beginning and put together a strong freshman season. At the Dayton Shootout, there were several who opened the eyes of those in attendance, and over the next couple of days, I will look at some of them.
Class of 2023 (part 1)
Kendal George, 5-7 Centerville
One of the top pure shooters in Ohio in her class, but can do more than shoot. I really like her court awareness and ability to find the open player for the best shot. She can get to the rim, has good handles and is not afraid of contact. She will just get better and will be in the gym to work on her game. Will be fun to watch progress the next four years.
Jaclyn Fye, 5-3 Brookville
Gives Brookville something they desperately needed, a solid point guard and floor general. Jaclyn has good range out beyond the arc, and does a nice job getting out in transition. Needs to be more aggressive on offense and use her strength to score. With two solid experienced posts coming back at Brookville, they should feed off each other well.
Lillian Gray, 5-10 Centerville
Hard to imagine a better incoming freshman class in the area this season with Gray, Watercutter and Kendal George. Gray impressed me at the Ohio Summer Showcase with her ability to score and create on offense. She does a nice job of moving without the ball. Great job inside finishing through contact. Good help side defense. Could work on running the floor when the rebound is secure.
Riley Hodson, 5-9 Valley View
Expect a solid high school career from Riley as she steps onto the floor with a very talented program. She has a nice baseline floater, and can attack her defender 1v1. She also has nice range at the 3pt line. Just needs to work on having more confidence in herself. That will come with age, and she will be a good one.
Madilynn Moore, 5-2 Tecumseh
A part of another solid incoming freshman class at Tecumseh, and the only one of the group I personally saw this summer. Madilynn does a solid job getting inside for her size and rebounding, and can also get out and run the floor well. Finishes well through contact, but needs to improve by getting more involved on the defensive end.
Allison Kinney, 5-10 Indian Lake
She was the best 2023 in the CBC that I saw this summer, and has a promising future in front of her. Allison (pictured above) has a nice quick shot release, and gets good positioning when posting up. Just needs to be confident in her next move.
