She is a top-notch competitor who is a floor general, a strong outside shooter and is always looking to make a play. She is a strong defender who takes pride in defending the opposing team’s top player.
A year ago, a young Lakin team went 7-15 overall, but Esquibel put together a strong sophomore season averaging 13.5 points, including a season high 31 points.
“Even though my high school season was a losing one, I learned the most about my game and the type of player I need to be in order for my team to succeed,” she said.
This past summer, Esquibel competed for Wheat State Elite and says the experience has helped her game grow as she prepares for her junior season.
“This summer has helped me develop as a player and person and I credit that to Wheat State Elite,” Esquibel said. “The coaches took the time to help me with my confidence, and defensive skills. in my downtime I have been working on getting to the rim and finishing. I’m known as a shooter, and I want to be known as a scorer.”
Esquibel says her aunt, Vanessa Esquibel, has had the most influence on her basketball career thus far.
“She has coached me since I was in third grade, and will coach me through high school,” she said. “Since I was a kid I wanted to be like her, and even adopted her high school number, 20. She has taught me the game, shaped me into the player I am today.”
Esquibel says she has received camp invites from Neosho Community College, Hastings College, Eastern New Mexico University, Northeastern State and Iowa Wesleyan, but does not yet hold an offer.
“I’m excited for this year and all the new opportunities it will bring,” she said.
