Opening Day in Ohio girls basketball is this Friday evening so this was one of the final times these three teams will take the floor in preparation for the start of the season.
Vastly improved- I was impressed with the hard work and effort from the girls at Delphos St. John, as they showed some improvement over previous years. They play in one of the top small school conferences in the state of Ohio, and they are looking to compete with the talented teams every night in that league. Paige Gaynier was a player I was interested in seeing, after having seen her in a couple of events this summer. Paige (pictured above) was a kid who really got after it, was a solid on-ball defender, can shoot from deep range and was a good floor leader. She stood out in the scrimmage when I was there.
Glad to have her back- Everyone saw what the talented team from Tri Village did last year, making a run at the regionals in Division Four. They return all of their key components except for the big loss of Emma Printz to graduation. They also bring in two talented freshmen who will make an immediate impact. One player who fans did not see last year and I feel could be the key to their success is the return of Trissa Porter. The senior guard missed last season due to a medical issue, but she is back and brings a lot of steadiness and control to the team on the floor. Handles the ball well under pressure and is a major threat from the perimeter. She is a huge piece to their puzzle.
Anna wants a big tourney run- Division Three basketball in this area is open for the taking, and one of the teams looking to challenge deep into the tournament are the Rockets. They have a lot of weapons both inside and out, and will challenge for a solid tourney run. Ella Doseck is a junior guard who handles the ball well, can score from the perimeter, but isn’t flashy. She just gets it done. Lauren Barhorst is a 6-foot-2 presence on the boards, can run the floor well and finish at the rim. Another one to watch is Kip Rowland, a multidimensional player who can score inside or out. Solid, balanced team.
