Riley McCloskeyMemorial
All-Tournament freshman Riley McCloskey simply went off during the event, even scored 12 of her team’s last quarter points in pool play against SBISD champion Westside, a game in which the Mustangs lost 58-52. McCloskey falls into that #sizedontmatter when you can play category and her legend is just beginning. Abigail Tomaski is another talented freshmen, she’s long, athletic and has a pull-up and when you add Morgan Matheny to the equation, this team is going to pull off some big wins after their Consolation Championship, but wait until next year, trust me
Stratford and Porter
Morgan Matheny & Jasmine GreenPorter fought hard starting off the third-place championship game against Dulles however the Vikings were simply too strong and deep. Solid PG play from Megan Stevenson as well as tough inside play from Emily Knollenberg tells me this team may be on the verge of something. Stratford also put up an early fight against Memorial in the consolation final, Jasmine Green is a talented sophomore with plenty of upside and she just brings “it” over and over, no matter what the score is, she plays the same way.
Dulles Vikings
Victoria Moore Teniola KuyinuOne of my earliest recollections of Dulles was watching freshman Eboni Mangum score 28 points in the final quarter to lead them to state, that was almost 20 years ago and she, Mangum, graduated in the deepest class ever out of the area which was the 2005 group. Dulles used to be a team you had to go through to get to Austin, where the state tournament was held and since they moved the venue to San Antonio, the Vikings are definitely showing signs, especially after last nights 2 point loss to 5A powerhouse Hightower, the Peggy Whitley Classic champion but more on that coming up. Nya Threatt is coming back from a knee injury, you’d never know because she floats like a butterfly to the basket and her sting is definitely felt from outside but when you throw in Maurdashia “Dai Dai” Powell, long and athletic wing that does damage on both ends, Teniola Kuyinu, ultra-athletic guard that elevates for baskets galore, oh and plays the passing lane as well as Cherria Robinson who just attacks from everywhere, well that’s a solid group, but I ain’t done. Victoria Moore joined Threatt on the All-Tournament squad and showed Moore is MORE than a 5’1 guard because she has no fear on either end. I liked this squad a lot last season, I’ll definitely catch them in the FB ISD Tournament this week, providing my crystal ball is clear and when Peyton Overton hits the floor in January, all bets are off
