Several players shined this week at the Huhtamki Classic hosted by DeSoto High School. The tournament featured Olathe Northwest, DeSoto, Shawnee Mission West, Olathe North, Truman, Gardner-Edgerton, Blue Valley Southwest and Mill Valley on the Kansas side, and Truman on the Missouri side.
Here, Prep Girls Hoops takes a look at several wings who impressed this week in DeSoto.
30 — Kierra Prim, 5’7, G, 2020, Shawnee Mission West
Prim is one of the best athletes you’ll see in Kansas’ hoops and she is lockdown defender who can defend multiple positions. Also a track and field athlete, Prim placed eight in the 100, sixth in the 200 and second in the 4×400 last spring at the state finals and spent the offseason running KC Run GMC. Prim handles the ball well, flies up and down the court in transition and has the ability to attack the basket and is an athletic finisher able to hang in the air and finish tough chances.
5 — Sofia Semon, 5’11, G/F, 2021, Gardner-Edgerton
A Lindenwood commit, Semon is a strong guard with terrific size who has the ability to consistently knock down perimeter shots. She rebounds well, can take the ball coast-to-coast off a defensive rebound and can handle the ball in the backcourt and see over the defense exceptionally well. Semon plays a point forward type position, helping her team get into the offense, but can also score in the paint or defend opposing forwards.
30 — Mackenzie Shupe, 5’8, G/F, 2020, DeSoto
One of the tournament’s top outside shooters, Shupe is a knock down shooter from distance with a quick release and a smooth repeatable shooting stroke. Shupe has the ability to run off screens and excels as a catch-and-shoot player. She showed the ability to come up with key steals and blocks and can handle the ball in the open floor.
24 — Emree Zars, 5’10, G, 2022, Mill Valley
A combo guard who can play either guard spot, Zars is a terrific all-around offensive player who can score in a variety of ways. She has the ability to knock down open shots from behind the 3-point arc, can score in transition and has the ability to carve out a path to the basket off the bounce and finish in the lane. Zars also has the ability to post up a smaller guard and does a good job taking advantage of her size, Zars has a high basketball IQ and uses it to her advantage well at the defensive end, reading plays as they develop and intercepting passes.
