Things have changed alot since we put out the Area Top Teams Rankings early before the season started; new teams have beaten other teams in tournament play and rankings have changed since then. Sierra Canyon still is atop the rankings for us, but many others below have changed positions, take a look at the new rankings here and think about how we formatted this system. We have seen all of these teams play numerous times and too us, we believe head-to-head is key, but some other variables come into play, such as strength of schedule and which tournaments you play in and where. Here we go, hope you enjoy this as much as we do. We will see most in Tarkanian Classic this week; then up North the West Coast Jamboree, rankings will change again before league starts this year.
#1: Sierra Canyon High School
Coach Alicia Komaki: Record – (7-1) only loss to DeSoto (TX); They are led by 2020, 5’7, PG, Vanessa De Jesus (Duke commit), 2020, 5’7, CG, Ashley Chevalier (Texas commit), 2020, 6’0, SF, Alexis Mark (Boise State commit) and 2020, 6’2, PF, Rosemary Odebunmi(Pepperdine commit)
Sierra Canyon will be one of the Nations power teams this season with their last years campaign coming out with a CIFSS Regional and State Championship. They are led by five D1 Players and that is very hard to deal with in todays basketball in California, there are not many schools in the state that can say that they are starting (5) Division 1 players and will compete for the State Championship again this year. Some up North may be close, but we think Sierra Canyon is the lock for State this year coming from the Southern Section.
#2: Long Beach Polytechnic High School
Coach Carl Buggs: Record – (4-0); They are led by 2020, 6’1, PF/C, Ashley Lewis, 2020, 5’6, CG, Iyanna Lamb, 2020, 5’7, SG, Kaci Scott and 2021, 5’9, Kalaya Buggs and 2021, SG, 5’10, Lily Buggs.
LB Poly is always tough as nails, each and every year under Coach Carl Buggs, it just the way things go. They are fast, they are long, they are tough, they are fearless. Poly will beat you up inside with play form Ashley Lewis (CSU Fullerton commit) and then press and rough you up with guard play from Iyanna Lamb, Kaci Scott, Kalaya Buggs and Lily Buggs. This team will be in the finals of some division, it is just what is expected of them.
#3: Mater Dei High School
Coach Kevin Kiernan: Record – (10-1); with only Loss to LB Poly in the Troy Classic. They are led by 2020, 5’10, SG, Camryn Kiernan (Concordia Irvine commit), 2021, 5’7, CG, Alyssa Frescas, 2021, 6’3, SG, Brooke Demetre (Stanford Commit), 2021, 6’1, F, Meaali’i Amosa and 2023, 5’6, PG, Caia Elisaldez.
Mater Dei has always been a power in Orange County Basketball, but has been able to take those talents and go across the country and win games with their system and above average IQ that the girls possess. You can always count on them to win games and they will set out to win some in the West Coast Jamboree after Christmas.
#4: Etiwanda High School
Coach Stan Delus: Record – (7-2) losses to LB Poly and Mater Dei; they are led by 2020s, 5’7, SG, Brianna Clayton, 5’7, PG, Breanne Ha, 5’6, PG, Joy Campbell, 6’1, PF, Destiny Okonkwo, 5’9, SF, Ayanna Flakes with new addition of Junior, 2021, 6’2, PF, Jessica Peterson
Etiwanda is always tough, Stan Delus does a fantastic job with his girls, they are always tough and will wear you down with their physical defensive game as well as dynamic offensive power. They are always in the game when you play them, they always have a chance to win against an opponent, cause they make you play their game. Watch for this program, they are fierce.
#5: Windward High School
Coach Vanessa Nygaard: Record – (6-2) losses to Rosary Academy and Corona Centennial; they are led by 2020, 6’1, SG, Kiayah Corona (Dartmouth commit), 2021, 5’11, SG, McKayla Williams(Gonzaga commit) and Freshman Phenom 2023, 6’1, CG, Judea Watkins
Windward will be tough again as well, They upset #1 Sierra Canyon last year in the CIFSS Open Championships behind the play of McDonalds All-American Charisma Osborne (UCLA commit). They are going to be good as well with the addition of the #1 Freshman in the Nation with Judea Watkins. With the solid experience they have and the new blood on this team, they are going to be a force to reckon with. We believe they will mesh together this year so well, by the Christmas break and be on their way to putting in some major work.
