Focusing on players in Northeast Ohio, today we took at a look at juniors. The class of 2021 is especially deep in Ohio and these 5 ballers fit into the star-studded group nicely.
Taylor Thierry – Laurel
The long and lanky guard has been on the radar of basketball fans and college scouts for years now, but this has without a doubt been Taylor’s best season. She is averaging 18 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists for the Gators – who many think are one of the best small-school teams in Ohio. Thierry (pictured above; photo credit – 3CHXtras YouTube) is disruptive on defense – getting steals and deflections at a high rate, often times turning them into easy buckets for her young team.
Maggie Long – Wadsworth
This hasn’t been the start that any Wadsworth wants – injuries have ravaged this year’s version of the Grizzlies – but Maggie Long has more than held her own. Long has battled the injury bug herself and she was essentially non-existent on the exposure circuit last summer, so it’s exciting to see her fast start. The sharpshooter is heady, rarely making silly mistakes. She is a dead-eye shooter from 3 and is an underrated ball-handler.
Kelsey Wolfe – Waynedale
Wolfe was a rare member of the class of 2021 who earned All-Ohio honors after her sophomore season, last winter. She did so after making over 60 3-pointers. Kelsey has shown no signs of slowing down – even draining 10 3-pointers in a game last week, setting the single-game school record for the Golden Bears. She has improved as a ball-handler and is more than just a stand-still shooter at this point in her career.
Clare Chambers – Magnificat
Magnificat is off to a fast start – a large reason behind that start is the play of Clare Chambers. Although Mags has balanced scoring (a number of different girls have led them on different nights), Chambers has been consistent. Another long and lanky shooter – Chambers dropped 32 on Walsh Jesuit with 7 3-pointers and 17 against Akron St. Vincent St. Mary’s.
Abby Stephens – Lake
Lake is not in the position to be competing for a Federal League championship, but they do have one of the Fed’s best players in Abby Stephens. Abby has been a walking double-double for the Blue Streaks, showing a rare ability to play inside and out and even at 5’10 – playing some point forward and creating easy scoring opportunities for her teammates.
