Here, Prep Girls Hoops takes a look at several 2023 Forwards.
Anna Briggs, F, 2023, Quinter
Briggs is a solid two-way player who can dominate both ends of the floor. She’s averaging 10.5 points and 10.4 rebounds per game. She looks to play physical inside and has a seasoned game despite only being a freshman. She rebounds well on the offensive glass and defensive, and can put up shots and get to the free-throw line and connect. Bringgs is also averaging 1.6 steals and 4.9 blocks per game. She’s shooting 43 percent from the floor showing an ability to stay inside and make plays.
Addy Brown, 6’2, G/F, 2023, Derby
Another extremely active freshmen for Derby who has great size and good mobility. Brown continues Derby’s tradition of active post players as she looks to make plays on both ends of the floor both around the basket and several feet outside.Brown is averaging 9.3 points, 2.2 assists, 5.7 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game. Brown is shooting 44 percent from the field and 71 percent from the free throw line. Brown is a great rebounder on both ends but has an eye for defensive plays.
Mykayla Cunning, 5’9, G/F, 2023, Salina Central
A nice freshman guard for Central who can play inside and on the perimeter. She can play with the ball in her hands and slashes well off the ball and is good at finding high percentage shots around the basket. She’s averaging 7.7 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game. She’s shooting 55 percent from the floor and looks to score inside and around the basket and uses her frame well and speed and overall toughness to her advantage as a defender and scorer.
Madi Denison, 5’10, F/C, 2023, Minneola
Denison is comfortable and half court settings creating place around the basket. She is strong for her age and is a smart player who listens to her coach and puts herself on the line to grab rebounds and cleanup plays around the basket. She’s averaging 10.2 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game. She’s also a good shot blocker who can contest shots and make scoring difficult for opponents when matched up against her.
Kodie Herd, 5’10, F, 2023, South Central (Coldwater)
Herd is a young standout player for South Central who can get physical in the paint and make plays both as a rim protector and a scoring option. An impressive defensive rebounder, Herd can back opponents down and looks to apply pressure quickly as a defender. She’s still young and take a few to many chances at times, but she’s a composed young player with a good head on her shoulders. Herd is the second leading scorer and leading rebounder for SC as she’s averaging 11.3 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game. She’s shooting 47 percent from the floor after 11 games and over 50 percent from the free throw line.
S’Mya Nichols, 6’0, G/F, 2023, Shawnee Mission West
Nichols has lead guard handles with the frame and height of a center. She’s extremely active as a defender and has long arms, strong hands and can stop plays and create turnovers and get physical. A rising standout in her class, Nichols brings a nice bounce to the floor and can go coast-to-coast and use her frame to feel for space and find openings around the basket. Although she’s just a freshman, Nichols has strong leadership qualities and can come up big on both ends of the floor.
