It was the third meeting of the season between the two teams in the championship game of an in-season tournament. Howell Central won both meetings to win tournaments at Lutheran St Charles and Fort Zumwalt North by a total margin of four points.
The third meeting was quite different from the first two as Howell Central raced to a big early lead and cruised to a 49-24 victory and a repeat St. Dominic championship.
Here is a look at The Best Of from the St. Dominic Tournament Championship Game:
Best Senior: Azaria Hulbert (Francis Howell Central) – The 5’6″ guard scored a game-high 18 points while making six of her nine field goal attempts from the field, including a couple of 3-pointers. She is physically strong on the dribble to get to her spots and can pull up for short jumpers. She also makes her free throws.
Best Junior: Gracie Stugart (Francis Howell Central) – The 5’5″ point guard is a consummate point guard who played an excellent overall floor game. She got things started with a pair of early 3-pointers, then settled into her role as floor leader and facilitator. She finished the game with seven rebounds and four assists to lead the team in both categories.
Best Sophomore: Trinniti Matthews (Francis Howell Central) – A long and athletic 5’10” wing player who does an excellent job at the top of Howell Central’s 1-3-1 zone defense. She can cause problems with her length and constant activity. She has a versatile game where you can post her up for buckets or she can create a shot off the dribble, especially with her spin move.
Best Freshman: Megan Aulbert (Lutheran-St. Charles) – The 6’0″ post player was one of the bright spots for the Cougars as she came off the bench to score seven points and grab five rebounds. She did a good job of using her size inside as she grabbed offensive rebounds and kept the ball up high to score. Her fundamentals were very good in the post.
Best Shooter: Gracie Stugart and Azaria Hulbert (Francis Howell Central) – Both of the Spartans’ starting guards made two 3-pointers each to give the team the perimeter spark that they needed.
Best Low Post Player: Jenna Grzeskowiak (Lutheran St. Charles): The 5’10” power forward is a physical performer who had a team-high eight points and six rebounds on the evening. She is not the tallest player in the post, but she makes up for it with her physical strength and tenacity around the basket. She is also a good and willing passer from the high post.
Best off the Bench: Gabbi Thomason (Francis Howell Central) – The 5’5″ 2020 guard provided an excellent spark off the bench with 10 points. She came into the game and immediately made a 3-pointer and a baseline jumper. She was very aggressive on the offensive end.
Best Ball Handler: Makayla Best (Francis Howell Central) – The 5’7″ 2020 guard can really handle the ball and she doesn’t mind showing off her dribbling ability. She does a nice job of getting in and out of tight spaces, plus she also handed out three assist.
Best Sister Act: Jada and Mahya Lindesmith (Lutheran St. Charles) – Jada is a 5’7″ 2020 guard while Mahya is a 5’5″ 2022 guard. Jada is a point guard who is a good ball handler and passer while Mahya is a nice perimeter threat from 3-point range.
