The following risk takers have figured out how to mix just enough of the basics with the right amount of the spectacular to become fan favorites.
(In alphabetical order)
Zoe Brooks, Trenton Catholic – Spin moves, hard in-and-out dribbles and one-handed dimes are her signature plays, but in the open floor, the crowd has learned to expect something jaw-dropping from the combo guard.
Maniya Custis, Trenton Catholic – Big shots, step backs, midrange pullups and around-the-back passes are expected whenever this standout point guard is on the floor.
Hannah Hidalgo, Paul VI – Although she is no slouch with the ball in her hands on the offensive end of the floor, she makes this list because of her defense. The ball hawk, who is known for picking offensive player’s pockets, makes locking up on D look cool.
Zanai Jones, Hudson Catholic – Is there anyone in the state who is faster with the ball? Despite being undersized, Jones weaves her way through traffic in the lane for tough finishes at the rim. She can also light it up from the outside.
Olivia Miles, Blair – Do yourself a favor and Google her highlights, you won’t be disappointed. Arguably the top point guard in the country, she plays with a type of flair that at times makes it look too easy. When she’s not showing off her handle and dropping assists, she’s stopping on a dime and draining pullups. Offensively, there isn’t a better playmaker.
Angelica Velez, Manchester – The New York native plays with a type of toughness that you can’t teach. With each dribble combination and attack of the basket, Velez seems to be on a mission to embarrass her defender.
