Here are the players to keep your eyes on, as they could be the difference-makers en route to championship glory.
Chatham’s Maddie Hartnett (l) defends Villa Walsh player.Maddie Hartnett, Chatham. Gaurd
If a defense loses where Hartnett has wandered off to on the court, she’ll make you pay for it. She’s lethal from outside and from behind the arc, helping to pour in a team-best 374 points.
The University of Scarton-commit is also tops of Chatham with 36 thefts. But don’t forget how she leads her club with fiery passion and spirited, clutch play.
Shannon Donohoe, Chatham, Forward
When it comes to game-changing defensive abilities, Donohoe is the one to call into action when the time arises. The six-foot senior forward is second on the team in steals (31) and leads the club with 11 blocks.
“She tremendously can play help defense,” head coach Joe Gaba said. “Shannon is probably the best forward that I’ve had that hedges on screens. She just knows when to pop out, not to commit the foul, and she does a really good job of not letting guards turn the corner.”
Additionally, she first on the Cougars in rebounds with 152, and is a dangerous post presence. Plus, Donohoe is third in scoring with 196 points.
Tess Ford, Chatham, Guard
Ford is a quick, speedy guard, with a sweet scoring touch. She’s second on Chatham in scoring with 204 points and does her job well as the team’s floor general, dishing out a team-best 78 helpers. Ford can also play defense, evident by her 24 steals, third on the Cougars.
Emma Wax, Montville, Guard
Emma’s last name is fitting, as the junior has simply waxed her opponents to the tune of 394 points this season, tops on Montville. Plus, she’s grabbed 124 boards (2nd), 71 dishes (1st), and team-highs in blocks (22) and steals (48).
Wax drained her 1000th high school career point earlier in the year in a 63-37 defeat of Hillside and isn’t quite finished adding to her already impressive hoops resume.
Bella Vito, Montville, Guard
What can you say about Bella Vito, a pure player who lights up the stat sheet game after game? The junior is first on the Mustangs in rebounds with 158, and second in scoring (333 points), assists (60), and steals (46).
Dani Vito, Montville, Junior
When it comes to Montville, Bella Vito and Emma Wax garner most of the hardwood attention. But an opposing team would be foolish to ignore Vito’s presence. She’s fourth on the squad in scoring (156 points), second in rebounds (119), third in assists (45), and first in blocks with 14.
