The Simon Kenton Lady Pioneers defeated the Southwestern Warriors 67-59 Saturday night. It was senior day for Simon Kenton and the Lady Pios came out ready to play, controlling the game throughout, although never quite putting Southwestern away. The Warriors had plenty of offensive firepower, but Simon Kenton's always strong team defense and ability to get inside on the other end made the difference. Here are some of the players who had the best performances.
[player_tooltip player_id="80523" first="Morgan" last="Stamper"], Simon Kenton- In a game that Simon Kenton's seniors badly wanted, nobody demonstrated their desire more than Stamper. The senior never stopped battling, grabbing rebounds, scoring 14 physical points inside, and ending up on the ground seemingly every other possession. Her effort paid off, as Stamper not only helped lead her team to victory, but also scored her 1500th career point Saturday, an impressive milestone to be sure.
[player_tooltip player_id="88422" first="Alexa" last="Smiddy"], Southwestern- There were times Saturday when Smiddy appeared to be the best player on the court, and she certainly did the most to help her team. The junior guard ran her team's offense, contributing to the majority of her team points by getting her own shot, ending up with 15 points, or making good passes to create looks for her teammates. While the Pioneer defense was tough to crack, Smiddy kept her team in the game and was able to lead a comeback attempt in the 4th that cut the lead to a point before coming up short.
[player_tooltip player_id="106150" first="Sereniti" last="Webb"], Simon Kenton- The consistent inside presence for the Pioneers, Webb did her job on Saturday. Southwestern did not have anybody who could match up with the sophomore center, and as a result, she pulled down plenty of rebounds, scored on some nice post moves, and drew a number of fouls for a game-high 19 points. She also played strong interior defense to help make it difficult for Southwestern to get anything at the rim.
[player_tooltip player_id="80503" first="Regi" last="Cundiff"], Southwestern- Had she not gotten into foul trouble, Cundiff's play may have made the difference for the Warriors. The senior forward best matched Simon Kenton's intensity, flying all over the court to grab rebounds and loose balls, while having by far the most success inside of anyone on her team. Unfortunately, this style also led Cundiff to foul out early in the 4th quarter, limiting her statistical contributions.
[player_tooltip player_id="80528" first="Maggie" last="Jones"], Simon Kenton- There are times when Jones shows her ability to knock down shots and fill the stat sheet, then there are games like Saturday's where the little things make the bigger impact. The senior guard was valuable on both ends, showcasing her ballhandling and vision to get the ball upcourt against a strong Southwestern press, and playing great defense on the other end, locking down perimeter players and coming in for an impressive block from behind in the paint. Jones showed that she doesn't need to be the focus of her team to make significant contributions.
[player_tooltip player_id="145018" first="Kennedy" last="Harris"], Southwestern- Most of Southwestern's offense Saturday came from beyond the arc, and Harris proved their best shooter. The senior guard was able to knock down 4 of 7 long-range shots to tie for a team-high at 15 points. Aside from her shooting, Harris's ability to find shots against Simon Kenton's well-organized defense was also impressive.
Mattie Vickers, Simon Kenton- Vickers didn't have as well-rounded a performance as some of her teammates, but she didn't need to. The senior's job was to knock down 3s, and she did that well, making 4 on 6 attempts, making her the most successful Pioneer shooter by far. She also contributed to her team's always tough to penetrate defense.
