A talented guard who has helped lead her team to so much success this season is sophomore Sidney Scruggs. The 5’5 guard is one of the more athletic players I’ve watched this season. Riverside is currently number three in their conference with a 8-3 record. Scruggs has stepped up and filled a role that has led to big victories this season.
Scruggs is a quick guard who plays with poise and composure at the rim. She is currently averaging 10.2 points per game for her team. In a win over Hamilton, Scruggs scored a season-high 21 points on 8-8 shooting as well as 3-3 from beyond the arch. She certainly has a scorers mentality and knows how to find her shooting spots. In a close game over rival Milwaukee School of Languages, Scruggs had 24 points to lead all scorers. She has an incredible shooting strock and has been a 60% three- point shooter this season.
As a freshman Scruggs saw a lot of minutes for her team. She was more of a role player last year and seemed to master all the little things for Riverside. However, being so young didn’t stop her from being a clear vocal leader on the floor as well. Scruggs averaged 9.7 points her freshman year. Playing alongside and practicing against two of the better guards in the conference, Scruggs was able to gain a lot of experience. As the season went on she continued to become more confident with the ball in her hands.
After an exciting summer in the AAU circuit, Scruggs developed into an even better player. Cominginto her sophomore campaign she improved her ball handling, perimeter shooting and defense. She added a step back three pointer and a hesitation drive that are nearly impossible to defend. The sophomore guard has continued to capitalize on the opportunities she’s given and shows she’s exactly where she deserves to be.
