Now that the season is complete, I wanted to circle back and offer up a handful of awards based on how everyone in Class 1A performed throughout the 2019-2020 season. As it specifically concerns the All-State teams, my decision was an equal-parts judgement call that factored in a combination of skill, ability, individual statistics, and team success from this specific season. With regards to the Freshmen (2023) class, I created a specific All-State team and Freshman of the Year award just for them, so you won’t see them in any of the other groupings except for Honorable Mention All-State. At the end of the day, this is simply an attempt to honor girls who I thought stood out this season in Class 1A.
<span style="font-size: 18pt;"><strong>MOST OUTSTANDING PLAYER</strong></span>
<span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="35057" first="Isabella" last="Reed"], 2021, 5-9 F, Greenwood Christian Academy</strong></span>
There were about three of four girls I had to choose from, but ultimately it came down to Isabella putting up huge numbers for one of the top Class 1A teams in the state, helping to guide them into the Semi-State. She was as tough as anyone finishing inside the paint, grabbing rebounds, drawing fouls, and getting to the free throw line regular. She also has the versatility to defend multiple types of players and always played with a tremendous motor. She still has another season left, so look for her to shoulder the load once again for Greenwood Christian.
<strong> </strong>
<span style="font-size: 18pt;"><strong>MOST VALUABLE PLAYER</strong></span>
<span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="23094" first="Maddi" last="Fulks"], 2020, 5-4 PG, Bethesda Christian School (<em>Cornerstone</em>)</strong></span>
When I consider ladies for the Most “Valuable” Player award, I try to think about which of the better teams would struggle the most if you removed one player from their roster. Maddi has been the heart and soul of this Bethesda Christian team for the last four years, and she has improved each season. She is as tough as they come, she is physical, skilled, and just a ballplayer. She can really shoot it with range, but she has also done a nice job of developing into a facilitator over the years. I really enjoy watching her play, and she should excite fans at Cornerstone University.
<span style="font-size: 18pt;"><strong>MOST IMPROVED PLAYER</strong></span>
<span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="130379" first="Emma" last="Hoover"], 2021, 5-10 SF, Northfield H.S.
</strong><strong>Kearston Stout, 2021, 5-9 SF, Northfield H.S.</strong></span>
Northfield has put together a nice run the last few years, and despite the graduation of two of their best players ever in 2019, Emma and Kearston both really stepped up their game this season. Yes, opportunity had something to do with their stats increasing, but they each played in all 28 Varsity games a season ago. Emma stepped into the starting lineup and played a point forward role for them, handling the ball most possessions. Kearston brought a ton of energy, athleticism, and versatility to the lineup. Both players scored in double-figures this year, more than doubling their output from a season ago. The combination of these two and several other underclassmen should make Northfield a Class 1A favorite in 2020-2021.
<span style="font-size: 18pt;"><strong>COMEBACK PLAYER OF THE YEAR</strong></span>
<span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="59732" first="Ashlynn" last="Brooke"], 2023, 5-6 PG, Pioneer H.S.</strong></span>
Typically, when you talk about comebacks, it’s usually someone who was limited the year before or even missed the entire previous season. However, in Ashlynn’s case, it’s hard not to make an argument for her in this spot. Ashlynn was putting together an impressive 2019 grassroots season in advance of her Freshman year, but it suddenly came to a halt in mid-July when she unfortunately tore her ACL. In many cases, this is an injury that players don’t usually return from for 9-12 months. However, Ashlynn only missed the first 13 games of this season, returning January 9th (<em>just six months later</em>), and in the 15 games she played, she helped lead Pioneer to the Class 1A State Finals.
<span style="font-size: 18pt;"><strong>FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR</strong></span>
<span style="font-size: 14pt;"><strong>[player_tooltip player_id="59779" first="Bailey" last="Tabeling"], 2023, 5-8 SG, Trinity Lutheran School</strong></span>
Bailey was so impressive at times during her Freshman season, that she was the District-3 winner of the IBCA’s Subway Player of the Week award on a pair of occasions. She has great length, is a fluid athlete, and she’s a smooth shooter from the perimeter. She posted a pair of 36-point games, a 32-point game, a 31-point game, and a 30-point game, not to mention 11 more games in the 20s with a quality team around her. She has really worked on her handle and playmaking ability, and she has gotten a little stronger, both of which should help her draw a lot of college interest this Summer.
