Central Jersey Group 1 action officially began on Monday night. The quarterfinals will be on Wednesday and they will feature the top eight seeds. Heading into action, there are plenty of prospects that need to be watched in this one. Here are the players to watch in the quarterfinals.
Brianna Montajes (2021) | Middlesex
Middlesex has just two losses on the season. They were one of the top teams in the GMC and are the top-seed in this state bracket. Montajes has been the focal point of their offense all season long. She is scoring 14.1 points per game as a junior. She leads the team in scoring and is second on the team in rebounds and assists. Opposing defenses will have to game plan to slow down Montajes if they want to upset Middlesex.
Cameron Ward (2020) | Bound Brook
It was another strong performance from Ward in Bound Brook;s 81-27 win in the first round. She scored a game-high 19 points and also had three steals. Ward is averaging 13.1 points and 8.2 rebounds per game as a senior. Down the stretch of the season is when Ward has started to play her best ball. She will be needed big time throughout the state tournament.
Sarah Weber (2020) | New Egypt
Weber led the charge in round one against Highland Park. They allowed just 15 points in their dominating win. Weber finished with 10 points and 17 rebounds. Weber has been dominant on both sides of the ball this season. She leads New Egypt in points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks. It is safe to say that Weber can fill up a stat sheet in any way.
Cassidy Burns (2021) | Point Pleasant Beach
It was Kristen Ohlinger who led the way in round one with 13 points. She was the only Beach player to score double-figures. Burns has seven points which was one of the lowest outputs of the season. She is a dynamic scorer. Burns is averaging 13.8 points per game this season. She has found a way to get to the free throw line at a high rate in every game.
Gabby Loftin (2023) | Florence
Loftin has turned into one of the top freshman in the state this season. The first year guard is averaging 14 points and five steals per game. Florence scored 37 points in the first round and Loftin finished with 15 of them. This has been the trend throughout the season and that will continue in the tournament.
Rebecca Phillips (2021) | South Hunterdon
Matching up with Weber from New Egypt will be Phillips of South Hunterdon. She finished with 13 points and five rebounds in the first game which is something she will have to repeat if they want to pull off an upset in the quarterfinals. Phillips is a player who can step out and shoot from deep or drive to the basket and draw contact. She is the reason South Hunterdon will not be an easy out.
