The stakes are high, as the Lady Cougars will have the added incentive of defending their 2019 Championship, while the Blue Streaks will play in their third straight sectional final, and will look to avenge last season’s title loss to the same team.
Here is a preview of the highly anticipated title tilt.
Chatham Lady Cougars
Chatham’s Tess Ford shoots a free throw against Summit.Chatham played its typical stingy, aggressive defense while three players scored in double digits in their 44-27 victory over fifth-seeded West Morris in the NJ, S2, G3 state tournament semifinal.
Lady Cougars’ leading scorer, senior guard Maddie Hartnett posted a game-high 15 points while junior point guard Tess Ford chipped in with 11 and 6′-1″ forward Shannon Donohoe posted a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
When that trio plays as well as it did versus the Wolfpack, Chatham is very difficult to beat, no doubt. Add in the fact that the squad will be playing in front of the raucous Cougar Nation, and the task becomes even harder for the Blue Streaks.
Senior Emma Frohnapfel, freshman Meja Jaegerskog, and sophomore Carly Frohnapfel give the Lady Cougars a size advantage and have created matchup problems down low for the opposition this season.
The Lady Cougars beat Irvington, Summit, as well as the previously mentioned West Morris squad for the right to battle for their second consecutive sectional crown.
Warren Hills Blue Streaks
Behind solid performances from juniors Meghan Dufner and Brynn Smith, the second-seeded Lady Blue Streaks edged No. 6 Mendham, 47-43, in the NJ, S2, G3 state semis at home.
Dufner dropped in 14 points and added seven rebounds, while Smith scored 11 points, grabbed five boards, dished out three assists, two blocks and four thefts in the victory.
Senior Heather Laffan, Warren Hills’ top scorer on the season with 396 points, chipped in with six points, three rebounds, and a steal.
Another solid hoopster for the Lady Blue Streaks is senior Advika Thandoni, who led her club in boards grabbed and blocks for the year with 154 and 30, respectivley, and scored 113 points to boot.
Additionally, Jaelyn Miller and Maddie Morgan are players that are capable of making big contributions.
Warren Hills defeated Rahway, Payne Tech, and the aforementioned Mendham en route to Tuesday’s matchup with the Chatham.
