Continue ReadingMontclair Immaculate is set to play in the semi-final round of the Non-Public B North state tournament on Saturday night. The sixth-seed is coming off an upset of No. 3 Marist. They will take on No. 7 Morris Catholic who also pulled off a big upset over No. 2 Villa Walsh.
Azatah Lawrence was the reason for Montclair Immaculate’s upset and this is nothing new. Lawrence finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds in the quarterfinal round. She also notched four steals in the 64-57 triumph. In round one, she finished with 14 points and eight rebounds. These were two of her 15 double-digit scoring performances this season. Her season-high came in a win over Mount St. Dominic. Lawrence finished that game with 26 points, six rebounds, three assists, seven blocks, and nine steals.
It has been a great season for Montclair Immaculate thus far. They are 20-8 on the year and made a run to the championship game of the Essex County Tournament. They lost to University in that game but have a chance to make up for it in this bracket. Montclair Immaculate goes from pulling off a quarterfinal upset to being the higher-seed in the semis.
For Montclair Immaculate to win it all, Lawrence will have to continue her dominance. And they know that. The offense has run from the inside which opens things up on the perimeter. Lawrence is a player that can score from anywhere. She has hit 43 three’s on the season and has been effective from the foul line. Lawrence is a capable passer but she is best with the ball in her hands looking to score.
This has been a great run to the semi-finals but it is not over. Montclair Immaculate believes they should win on Saturday night and be in position to play for a state championship. It will be an exciting night of action when Lawrence leads her team out onto the floor.
