It has been a strong season for Cresskill. They are 19-6 overall and made it to the semi-finals of the NJIC Tournament. They are coming off a 60-12 pummeling of New Milford in the first round of the North Jersey Section 1 Group 1 state bracket. To no surprise, Colleen McQuillen led the way.
McQuillen finished with 35 points, 11 rebounds, five assists, and six steals in the first round of the state tournament. She is the leading scorer in the bracket by a large margin. McQuillen has scored 638 points this season and is averaging an eye-opening 25.1 per game. There have been just five games this season where McQuillen was held under 20 points. She has eight games of 30 points or more including a 41-point outburst in a loss to Paramus Catholic.
The ability to score is impressive enough, but McQuillen is also a dominant rebounder. She is grabbing close to nine per contest. McQuillen leads Cresskill in many other categories such as steals, three’s made, and free throws made. McQuillen has knocked down 57 three’s and 99 free throws this season. Saying that she is one of the best juniors in New Jersey is an under statement. McQuillen is one of the top players in the state and her stat line shows it.
It is just not the stat line that jumps out. It is McQuillen’s raw ability to dominate when everyone knows where the ball is going. McQuillen has found different ways to score depending on how the game is being played. The basketball IQ matches the skill in her game.
Cresskill has a superstar. This means that they are immediate favorites to win the state tournament. They could be in for a dream matchup against North Warren if all goes the way of the seeds. McQuillen is already off to a red hot start to begin the tournament and if her season is any indication, there is no way for opponent to slow her down.
