The season may have just come to an abrupt end. That being said, the games and talent on the court this season were truly special. There were a lot of seniors that had great seasons and accomplished a lot in their encore campaign. We will look at the finalists for the Most Outstanding Player, and choose 1 recipient of the honor. This was a loaded and deep field with any number of deserving finalists and award winners. * Since previous articles had covered my stand on inviting as many as finalists as deserve to be there, I have cut my list to just the top 7. There are additional players, that if I was holding an awards ceremony, would certainly be invited.
FINALISTS
[player_tooltip player_id="126233" first="Jasmine" last="Clerkley"] (PF, Okemos) Clerkley’s game continued to expand. This season she showed improved ball skills and an ability to step away from the rim. She’s had a memorable 4 years at Okemos and is an elite talent in Michigan. [player_tooltip player_id="23751" first="Cameron" last="Grant"] (PF, Macomb Dakota) Grant will be remembered for her versatility and leadership. She was an outstanding 2 way player. Grant showed a very high basketball IQ throughout her high school career. She had led her team to a Regional Finals appearance. [player_tooltip player_id="126235" first="Cheyenne" last="McEvans"] (CG, Southfield A&T) McEvans sent the basketball community in Michigan a message this season: That she is as talented as any player in the state. McEvans put up huge numbers this season and proved that she was as creative as they come offensively. [player_tooltip player_id="126236" first="Aaliyah" last="McQueen"] (SF, Flint Carman-Ainsworth) McQueen is a superstar talent that played as such all season. She was a consistent scorer and very active on the glass. McQueen will leave a basketball legacy in the Flint area. [player_tooltip player_id="23749" first="Aaliyah" last="Nye"] (SF, East Lansing) Nye has put herself on the list of all time basketball greats from the Lansing area. She was the senior leader for one of the teams favored to make a run at a state championship. They had reached the Regional Championship game. [player_tooltip player_id="23748" first="Whitney" last="Sollom"] (PF, Hartland) Sollom has left her mark on Hartland High School basketball. She’s a versatile post player with great footwork in the paint. Sollom and her team will go down as 1 of the greatest in school history, reaching the Regional title game.
MOST OUTSTANDING PLAYER
[player_tooltip player_id="2478" first="Gabrielle" last="Elliott"] (SF, Detroit Edison) Elliott is an elite athlete with prime time skills. She attacks the basket off the wing and is an efficient 3 level scorer. In my opinion, Elliott is a top 15-20 prospect nationally. She was the leader of a Detroit Edison squad looking to 4-peat as state champions. With that, came an incredible amount of pressure, the most of which falls on the shoulders of the senior leader. Elliott handled that pressure with grace and class. She, and her Detroit Edison team, lived up to any and all expectations in the 2019-2020 season. Elliott had led her team to the Regional Finals and were ready to defend their title.
