Many Sophomores stepped up to play big roles on their teams this season. Others played key roles to help their team and will be players to watch. Let’s breakdown a few sophomores who have stood out this season, and stock is now rising.
Taylor Thiry | Luxemburg- Casco | 5’9 F
Leading her team this season, Thiry averaged 14.2 points per game. A defensive specialist for her team, Thiry is furrocious on the glass. She led her team in rebounding this season with 9.9 per game. In a close game over Denmark, Thiry grabbed a season-high 18 boards. She had 13 offensive rebounds this game, also a season-high.
Imani Ninham | West De Pere | 5’7 G
Ninham does a little bit of everything for West De Pere. In many games this season, Nihman was assigned the opposing team’s biggest threat. She’s strong in the paint and has the ability to play the post position very well. She averaged 13 points per game this season. She was second in her team for scoring.
Mahra Wieman | Reedsburg | 5’10 G
The guard has a rare combination of height and skill that makes her ultra-dynamic. She has handles offensively and will attack from the perimeter. She’s strong on defense and has the ability to block shots or defend in the paint. She led her team in scoring this season, averaging 20 points per game. In a win over Wisconsin Rapids, Wieman dropped a season high 30 points.
Katie Huml | Janesville Craig | 5’7 G
Huml added 13.2 points per game this season for Janesville Craig. She’s incredibly scrappy and hustles the entire game. Huml sees a lot of minutes on the floor and stays composed through it all. A facilitator for Janesville Craig this season, Huml did a good job distributing the ball to her open teammates. She averaged 2.4 assists per game.
Paige Werner Paige Werner 6'0" | PF Neenah | 2022 State WI | Rice Lake | 6’0 F
Olsen was the vocal leader for her team this season. She commands the ball on offense and knows how to find her shooting spots. She’s developed a mid range game this season and has confidence shooting on the perimeter. She averaged 12.8 points and 6.3 rebounds per game.
Elena Barnes Elena Barnes 5'10" | CG New Berlin West | 2022 State WI | Watertown Luther Prep | 6’1 F
A strong presence inside the lane is Schmidt. She’s incredibly talented in the paint. Schmidt does a great job creating space for herself on the block. She averaged 23.4 points per game and 14.4 rebounds per game. In a game over East Troy she dropped 35 points in the win. She led her team in scoring and rebounds this season before becoming a unanimous 1st team all conference selection.
Nakiyah Hurst Nakiyah Hurst 6'0" | PF Milwaukee Academy of Science | 2022 State WI | Pius XI Catholic | 6’1 C
A strong post player averaged 12.1 points per game this season. Playing behind two of the state’s best post players, Moore showed her talent in new ways this season. She’s been a consistent threat on both ends of the floor this season. She averaged 8 rebounds a game for Pius XI. In a win over Rhinelander, she dropped a season-high 23 points and grabbed 9 boards
Lyric Johnson | Hortonville | 5’9 F
A defensive powerhouse for Hortonville this season. She’s extremely strong and has quick footwork. This season she averaged 4.1 rebounds per game and had over 100 on the season. Johnson averages 5.1 points per game for a top Hortonville squad.
