Mia Hughes Mia Hughes 5'11" | PF Woodinville | 2021 State WA was one of the headliners at this year’s state tournament. In her final two games of the season, Hughes put up 23 and 9 against Glacier Peak while going 5 of 11 from the field and 13 of 17 from the line, and in the championship game, she scored 28 of her teams 55 points, shooting 11 of 21 from the field and a perfect 6 of 6 from the line. She added 9 rebounds in each of those games as well. This was all par for the course for a junior who averaged 22.2 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 2.3 steals on the year while averaging 50% from the field. Hughes rarely steps out behind the arc, and instead relies on her strength and handles to get to the rim and score, and she makes use of that strength on the defensive end of the court to challenge drives and force difficult shots from her opponents.
Linsey Lovrovich Linsey Lovrovich 5'9" | SG Peninsula | 2021 State WA | 5’9″ G | Peninsula
I was able to see Linsey Lovrovich Linsey Lovrovich 5'9" | SG Peninsula | 2021 State WA play earlier this year at a holiday tournament in the south end, and she was a player that stood out in warmups because of her undeniable athleticism. Her athleticism carried over into the game where she showed off her ability to get to the hoop, and regardless of how she was defended, she finished through contact and made awkward shots look natural. Lovrovich needs to improve her jumper if she wants to become a truly dominant force, but she still managed to average just under 17 points per game, 5.4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals. In her best game of the season, Lovrovich scored a game-high 26 points against North Thurston while knocking down 60% of her 2-point field goal attempts. Lovrovich is a handful in the open court and defensively, she has the speed and athleticism to keep up with anyone.
Jaliyah Sampson Jaliyah Sampson 6'0" | SF Rainier Beach | 2021 State WA | 6’0″ G/F | Rainier Beach
Jaliyah Sampson Jaliyah Sampson 6'0" | SF Rainier Beach | 2021 State WA has an imposing physique that is only outshined by her motor. She’s the type of athlete that makes other girls think twice about racing her for a loose ball, and she has the physicality to match up with anyone. Sampson has the potential to go for a double-double night in and night out, and she can score in a variety of ways. She has the range to knock down threes as well as the physical power to get to the hoop, but even when the shots aren’t falling, Sampson will be a reliable scorer because of her hustle and offensive rebounding. Sampson will play a big role next season for a Vikings team that will lose five seniors.
Karina McMillan | 5’7″ CG | Sumner
Karina McMillan didn’t have an impressively efficient season for the Sumner Spartans, but the ball-dominant point guard still had a solid season in which she averaged 11.5 points and 5.4 rebounds per game while leading her team in assists and steals. McMillan is her team’s main threat from deep, accounting for 37 of her team’s 97 threes this season, and she has the athleticism to get to the basket. McMillan has great court-awareness, that she uses to her advantage as a passer and to attack the offensive boards. McMillan has always been a solid rebounding guard, and she averaged just under 5 rebounds per game in 2018-2019, but this season, she really increased her scoring output, nearly doubling her ppg. In her two best performances this year, she scored 22 points against Curtis while going 9 of 11 from the free-throw line, and she scored 16 points against Graham-Kapowsin with 4 threes.
Hayley Flores Hayley Flores 5'6" | PG Auburn Mountainview | 2021 State WA | 5’6″ G | Auburn Mountainview
Hayley Flores Hayley Flores 5'6" | PG Auburn Mountainview | 2021 State WA has one of the most deceptively-quick jumpers I’ve seen, and she isn’t afraid to hoist either. Flores started and finished her season with games against Federal Way in which she shot 5 of 9 from deep, she totaled 58 threes this year, and on a day where she would score her season-high of 23 points, she shot 7 of 22 behind the arc. Auburn Mountainview had a season in which they finished just over 500, and Flores carried her team as she accounted for approximately 1/3 of their scoring. Hayley also has quick feet on the defensive end of the court and great court vision especially when looking to push the ball or find an outlet pass to get the break started. Although she prefers the deep ball, she has strong enough handles to get to the basket and she can score with a floater as well.
