Lower seeds feel comfortable in this format because it is a one-and-done system. Anything can happen and we are being shown that every night. Here are the top upsets from Tuesday night.
No. 14 Shawnee over No. 3 Clearview: It was a low scoring affair from the get go as Shawnee pulled off the major upset 43-37. Ciana Veccharelli led the way with 12 points and freshman Nia Scott finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
No. 12 Union City over No. 5 Livingston: Sophomore Erika Mercedes scored all 10 of Union City’s points in overtime to lead them past Livingston. She finished with 31 points in the game including two free throws late in regulation to tie the game.
No. 12 Raritan over No. 5 Metuchen: Lucy Alberici put on a show for Raritan with 33 points as they took down Metuchen 70-46. Joel Tarrazi added 12 points for Raritan who blew out Metuchen in the second half.
No. 11 Mater Dei over No. 6 Calvary Christian: It was a 45-37 win for Mater Dei to advance to the quarterfinals over No. 6 Calvary Christian. Madison Lopez scored 12 points to lead Mater Dei’s balanced offensive attack.
No. 11 Hunterdon Central over No. 6 Piscataway: Hunterdon Central made quick work of the sixth-seed in this one. They kept their momentum going after a championship appearance in the Hunterdon/Essex/Warren Tournament. They have won 10 of their last time including this 55-35 win over Piscataway.
No. 10 Toms River North over No. 7 Eastern: This matchup was back-and-forth all night long. Toms River North kept hanging around until they were able to steal the game at the buzzer, 54-53. Jaclyn Benvenuto and Julia Grodzicki finished with 13 points each for the Mariners.
No. 10 Gill St. Bernard’s over No. 7 Trinity Hall: Gill St. Bernard’s has been a strong team all season led by stars and they proved that in round one. It was an easy 63-40 win over Trinity Hall. Caileigh Walsh led Gill St. Bernard’s with 16 points and 11 rebounds.
No. 10 Voorhees over No. 7 Roselle: Lily Folson scored 14 points for Voorhees as they blew this game open in the second quarter. It was a dominating 63-32 victory over Roselle that will send Voorhees to the quarterfinals of their bracket.
