Below is a list of Sophomores to know. These players below are super versatile and will be impact players for their teams in the years to come.
Mahra Wieman | Reedsburg | 5’10 G
Wieman is a tall guard who uses her size to effectively score over defenders. Wieman is a super well rounded player who impacts the game in multiple ways. She’s a scorer. She puts her head down and attacks the rim. The sophomore averaged 20 points per game this season. She’s a knock down shooter from beyond the rim as well. Wieman made 35 three point shots this year.
Grace Vesperman | Mt. Horeb | 5’6 G
Vesperman was a great role player this year for her squad in the beginning of the season. As time went on she seemed to quickly develop many aspects of her game. She became a quick defender accounting for the cause of multiple turnovers per game. This season the guard averaged 6.5 points per game. While her outside shooting percentage could improve, Vesperman does a great job of finding an open shot for herself and teammates.
Ava Loftus | Stoughton | 5’7 G
Leading her team in scoring this season was an impressive guard who set the tempo off the offense by running it with patience at poise. At 5’7 Loftus showed she is super dynamic. She’s athletic- seeing a lot of minutes per matchup. This season she averaged 11.1 points per game. An outside shooting threat as well, Loftus made over 30 three point baskets this year. She’s a great all around player who impacts the game with her defense. Loftus grabbed over 25 steals this season. A relentless rebounder, the guard averaged 4.0 rebounds a game. Loftus was a First Team All Conference selection.
Tyla Staude | Fort Atkinson | 5’8 CG
The sophomore really came out of her shell this season. She proved she has the skills to facilitate the offense, distribute the ball and defend against top scorers. Staude is a primarily inside shooting threat, grabbing rebound put backs often. She also pushes the ball well in transition and has a good finish in the lane. Staude isn’t afraid of contact. She is mid-range efficient as well. Staude averaged 11.4 points per game for her squad.
Kate Huml | Janesville Craig | 5’7 G
A gifted athlete, Huml has become a great all around player to watch. She has a good feel for the game. Huml knows her spots on the floor, how to get to them and how to get other’s open in the process. Second on her team in scoring this season, Huml averaged 13.2 points per game. She attacks the basket well in transition. She also has a smooth release to her shot. Huml averaged 13.2 points for Janesville Craig. A great distributor as well, the sophomore led her team in assists with 2.4 per game. Huml was selected as Second Team All Conference.
Shelby Thornton | Menomonie | 5’7 G
Thornton became a quick triple threat for her team this season. She’s an all around player on both ends of the floor. She attacks the basket on offense. She led her team in scoring with 11.6 per game. She’s quick, athletic and has a great motor. She plays 100% all the time. A tough- nosed guard who isn’t afraid to take the big shot or attack against contact. She led her team in passing with 2.3 assists per game. The guard is a fast defender as well, helping her team grab multiple steals in transition play. Thornton was a Second Team all conference selection this season.
Mayah Holzhueter | Cambridge | 5’10 F
Holzhueter led her team in points and rebounds this season. Holzhueter has a good release and touch to her shot. She’s a super versatile mid-post and short corner around the basket. When open, Holzhueter knocked down some great three point shots this year. The forward averaged 12.6 points per game, leading her team.. A rebounding specialist, Holzhueter uses her body well to box out. She averaged 8.5 rebounds per game. Holzhueter was a first team all conference selection in the Capitol South conference.
