There is a standstill in grassroots basketball right now, and quite frankly, it’s driving me crazy. I was looking forward to seeing some great players in the class of 2021 this spring and summer. Let’s take a look at some of the 1-on-1 matchups from the seniors to be that I hoped to see during grassroots season.
[player_tooltip player_id="138300" first="Kenzie" last="Bowers"] (2021, PG, Kent City)
vs.
[player_tooltip player_id="138299" first="Kailee" last="Davis"] (2021, PG. Detroit Renaissance)
Bowers and Davis are 2 of the premier point guards in the state. Bowers is a historically lethal shooter from behind the arc and Davis is an excellent defender. I’d love to see Davis employ her pestering full court defense against the offensive firepower of Bowers
[player_tooltip player_id="4142" first="Jillian" last="Brown"] (2021, CG, East Grand Rapids)
vs.
[player_tooltip player_id="27971" first="Ella" last="Stemmer"] (2021, SG, Saline)
Both of these stars ended the season on a tear. Brown has established herself as a D1 high major target and Stemmer was in the midst of leading Saline to possibly its greatest run ever. I’d like to see how they matched up this spring and summer.
[player_tooltip player_id="138322" first="Genevieve" last="Decker"] (2021, SF, Anchor Bay)
vs.
[player_tooltip player_id="138316" first="Elizabeth" last="West"] (2021, SF, Williamston)
I’d gladly drop a $10 tournament entry fee to see these 2 square off. Decker is explosive offensively, playing downhill at all times. West is sort of your do-it-all wing that is more than the boxscore necessarily says.
Lolo Chambers (2021, PF, West Bloomfield)
vs.
[player_tooltip player_id="138323" first="Nicole" last="Kamin"] (2021, PF, Escanaba)
There’s nothing better than a good old battle in the trenches. Their styles might not be the same, but these are 2 fighters in the paint. Every possession would be battled tooth and nail.
Kalise Christopher (2021, SF, East Kentwood)
vs.
[player_tooltip player_id="27983" first="Kaiden" last="Glenn"] (2021, G/F, Arbor Prep)
This matchup would an instant classic. Glenn has a strong base and can both finesse and bulldog her way to the bucket. Christopher is a long athlete that attacks the passing lanes. Their styles would be an exciting mix.
