Mariah capped off her masterpiece of a senior season with two clutch games for Muskegon at the Breslin Center. She could not be stopped during a dominant Lady Reds victory in the semifinals. Mariah scored 25 points and grabbed six rebounds. She penetrated off the dribble with explosive quickness and got to the free-throw line at will. Mariah drained a smooth corner pull-up and absorbed contact to convert a tough layup. She elevated way off the floor and drove to the rim, going full throttle. Mariah made drive-by layups look easy and showed off her silky smooth pull-up game. In the State Championship Game, Mariah led the way with 14 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks. She elevated to hit a pull-up jumper from the elbow, knocked down a triple off a screen, and knocked down another pull-up in the lane. Mariah kept good defensive positioning on a drive and timed up the shot perfectly to jump up and swat the shot away with authority. She sealed the victory with four free throws down the stretch and led the team in scoring during both victories. Mariah is the D1 All-Breslin Team MVP and a State Champion.

Mariah, a senior guard for Muskegon, showed why she’s one of the most dynamic players on the floor. Using her blazing quickness and impressive leaping ability, she constantly pressured the defense and created scoring chances throughout the game. Mariah finished with 19 points and six rebounds, attacking the basket and displaying a variety of crafty finishes in traffic. In the district finals matchup against Rockford, she repeatedly took control when her team needed it most, playing with the determination of someone unwilling to see her high school career come to an end. Performances like that are exactly why she has earned recognition as a Miss Basketball candidate.

“Call her Air Mariah”, is what I found myself saying to a friend after I watched Sain use a swift crossover dribble, explode past defenders, then float in mid-air to score a double-clutch finish off the glass. She’s a special talent and her high-flying athleticism is something you just don’t see on the regular. Most players play on the floor, but Mariah plays above it. I wrote down “plays above the floor” multiple times in my notes and that includes jump shots. She cut backdoor to score a euro-step layup and split the gap with her dribble to bury a smooth free-throw pull-up. Mariah beat a double team in the corner with a quick spin move and beat the midline defender to the basket for another hanging finish. She dished out assists, used wide pushout dribbles to create driving lanes, and scored a put-back after crashing the glass. Mariah earned West Michigan Hoop Summit Co-MVP honors, leading Muskegon with 17 points to go with five rebounds and three assists.
