Picture Credit: 2127Media Quite a few freshman made their mark on the floor by making significant contributions through small but impactful marks during their time on the floor. Their role was a pivotal one, as they had to perform in order to earn their spot out on the court. They did this by minimizing mistakes and helping out the team any way they could. [player_tooltip player_id="158549" first="Tabi" last="Searle"] from Tualatin brings a lot of versatility in the build of a tall, athletic, guard whereas Tigard’s [player_tooltip player_id="158552" first="Hailey" last="Shimojima"] and Sutherlin’s [player_tooltip player_id="158548" first="Micah" last="Wicks"] are floor generals that are shifty and quick. Benson’s [player_tooltip player_id="158566" first="Ludasia" last="Whatley"]’s reputation is purely based off her effort and energy she brings every night, as she invigorates her team in this regard. [player_tooltip player_id="158557" first="Sydney" last="Brewster"] and [player_tooltip player_id="158563" first="Rilyn" last="Quirke"] were coordinated forwards for their teams that contributed all across the board for their teams. Here are some of the best glue players of 2023. [player_tooltip player_id="158549" first="Tabi" last="Searle"] 2023 5’10" SG Tualatin HS - Tabi is a tall, athletic guard for Tualatin that was counted upon by her team to fill in several roles this past season. She has a quick first step and has a good amount of wiggle and fluidity going towards the basket. Her height allows her to see over the defense, enabling her to become a good shooter and she displays good form. She is often the first one down the court during the fastbreak as she translates this effort into easy points. Her length allows her to be a good defender through pure grit and determination. Good passer. [player_tooltip player_id="158552" first="Hailey" last="Shimojima"] 2023 5’5" PG Tigard HS - The quick floor general for the Tigers utilizes her athleticism on both ends of the floor. Hailey helped run this show this past season through her solid pace, change of speed, good decision making, and tight handle. She showed maturity and leadership skills as it was her job to get the show running, illustrated by her 4 assists per game in the Portland Holiday Classic. Good lateral movement equates to a superb defender that can initiate the transition offense once the ball is in her hands. [player_tooltip player_id="158548" first="Micah" last="Wicks"] 2023 5’5" PG Sutherlin HS - Micah played a huge role in Sutherlin’s successful season in which they battled with Clatskanie several times throughout the season, coming up short to them in the 3A State Final. Wicks is a floor general whose job is to set up the offense by observing the floor and making calculated decisions throughout their possession. She plays with quite the poise and confidence, as she knows her time to step up and score as well. Good rebounder for her height and solid defender. [player_tooltip player_id="158566" first="Ludasia" last="Whatley"] 2023 5’3" SG Benson HS - Ludasia is a sparkplug for Benson, whose energy and focus is entirely capped off by her speed and agility. Her specialty is the big steal out of seemingly nowhere, which is exchanged for an easy basket on the other end. Such plays ignite her team and help garner momentum. She is defensively engaged, constantly looking for the edge and not afraid to pester her opposition. [player_tooltip player_id="158557" first="Sydney" last="Brewster"] 2023 6’0" PF Sandy HS - Sydney was relied on by Sandy to help establish an interior defense with her height and presence. She is a great rebounder for this stage in her development and has good awareness to get steals and loose balls within her vicinity. Great length and wingspan that allows her to be a good defender by simply bringing her arms up on defenders. Good insider scorer with good touch around the basket. Excels by playing her game for her team and helps them out by simply playing her role. [player_tooltip player_id="158563" first="Rilyn" last="Quirke"] 2023 6’0" PF Barlow HS - Rilyn’s biggest attribute is her size, which helps her tremendously on the defensive side of the ball. She is an aggressive defender at the rim who isn’t afraid of the big moment, resulting in big blocked shots - and with good timing. Shows good agility and footwork around the rim, good handles for her size and a nice mid-range game as well. Good follow through on the three-ball and she will knock it down it open. One skill that pops out about her is the considerable coordination she has for someone her size.
