As we look for other ways to cover prospects we thought it would be beneficial to cover players in a way that allows us to cover those we don’t write much about. We will be using the region’s from last season as they were constructed.
Obviously, these regions will change into next season but for these stories it was the easiest way to divide players and teams as equally as possible.
We will be writing a series of three stories for each region in the state and the categories are as follows: 2023’s to put on Your Radar, 2022’s who can Breakout, and 2021’s Who Should be Valued by Colleges.
We will continue to go through each region and aim to hit as many players as we can that we haven’t talked about previously. Here are five 2021’s who should be valued by colleges.
[player_tooltip player_id="165019" first="Jayden" last="Frank"] - Garner-Hayfield/Ventura
Leading returning scorer [player_tooltip player_id="165019" first="Jayden" last="Frank"] is back for Garner-Hayfield/Ventura as they look to make waves in the Top of Iowa Conference.
Frank posted a team-high 259 points last season, as the Class of 2021 standout averaged just under 12 per game. She shot 35 percent from the field and made 27 three-pointers, adding 125 rebounds, 54 assists, 37 steals and 26 blocks.
[player_tooltip player_id="164981" first="Chelsey" last="Holck"] - Clear Lake
While Clear Lake had a solid group of seniors they will need to replace after going 23-3 and reaching the state semifinals, the Lions boast a strong core junior class ready to take over.
[player_tooltip player_id="164981" first="Chelsey" last="Holck"] is one of those Class of 2021 players looking forward to a big senior season. Holck posted 254 points with 104 rebounds, 38 assists, 25 steals and 15 blocks last year, shooting 49 percent from the field, 75 percent from the free throw line and sinking 29 three-pointers.
Kendal Clark - Humboldt
Multi-sport athletes are key to the success of many schools, but being a multi-sport athlete during one season is very rare. Humboldt’s Kendal Clark did that this past winter, helping the Wildcats on the basketball court while also winning a state wrestling title.
Clark scored 232 points for Humboldt on 47 percent shooting from the floor with 170 rebounds, 53 steals, 39 assists and 34 blocked shots.
Ellie Caylor - Forest City
Forest City returns several starters and regulars from a year ago including Class of 2021’s Ellie Caylor.
Caylor recorded 215 points with 90 rebounds, 61 assists and 40 steals last year. She shot almost 40 percent form the field, made 25 three-pointers and got to the free throw line 60 times.
[player_tooltip player_id="131168" first="Darby" last="Dodd"] - Clear Lake
As a junior, [player_tooltip player_id="131168" first="Darby" last="Dodd"] led the Lions with 58 made three-pointers, shooting 41 percent from deep. She scored 220 points with 83 rebounds, 58 assists and 33 steals.
With the graduation of [player_tooltip player_id="134353" first="Sara" last="Faber"] and [player_tooltip player_id="135129" first="Julia" last="Merfeld"], even more will be expected of Dodd in the coming season along with other returning players such as [player_tooltip player_id="131235" first="Zoe" last="Fasbender"], Kaitlyn Vanderploeg and [player_tooltip player_id="131273" first="Ali" last="Maulsby"].
