Continue ReadingIn the Massachusetts class of 2023, there are plenty of intriguing prospects. It’s almost too early to tell exactly where they’ll end up in terms of college level, but nonetheless, there are some intriguing talents who will emerge when the next AAU/high school season comes around.
Here are five under of my under the radar players in Massachusetts in the class of 2023. These rising sophomores still have a ton of time to develop their games, but already showed flashes of excellence early in their high school careers.
Julie Bahati, Springfield Central/Springfield Lady Ballers
Coming out of a school that pumps out a Division 1 player or two each year, the 6-foot-2 forward may be next in line. Bahati consistently scored in double figures for what is a traditionally guard oriented Springfield Central team. Bahati can even handle the rock a little bit.

Chayil Mauristhine, Nobles/Boston Showstoppers
I’m not quite sure what it is about the 5-foot-8 guard’s game, but Mauristhine stuck out to me when I watched Nobles. She didn’t get a ton of minutes, but Mauristhine’s ability to control the tempo of the game with the ball in her hands stood out. Mauristhine may have to wait her turn for a loaded Nobles squad, but she’s learning from myriad Division 1 players.
Madi Forman, Natick/Bay State Jaguars
Playing and practicing with Yale commit Brenna McDonald every day likely helped Forman’s game, but her overall impact during the high school season will be much greater next year when she moves to being the focal point of the offense. The 6-foot-2 forward has some range, but is especially sound with her back to the basket. Forman’s game isn’t flashy, but it works. Look for Forman to make a major jump in her game over the next calendar year.
Chinenye Odenigbo, Norwood/Boston Showstoppers
The next time we re-rank the class of 2023, Odenigbo may find herself at the top of the Massachusetts rankings. Going into her freshman season at Norwood, Odenigbo was little known. Despite coming off the bench all high school season, the 6-foot-5 center recently earned offers from Ole Miss and Central Florida. Odenigbo is extremely active in the paint for her size, and has a soft touch around the basket. Her potential is through the roof.

Bianca Ortiz, Holyoke
Put it simply, Ortiz gets buckets. She had four 20-plus point games as a freshman, including a 33 point outburst in just her fourth high school game. The lefty guard is a joy to watch.
