Continue ReadingThree times a week, a select group of girls from across Cape Cod works with Coach Ben Vaneria — once individually, once in a position-appropriate setting, and once in an off-court setting to address strength and conditioning. The players focus on skill development and they are looking to improve their games in an effort to play at the collegiate level. Over the past few years Coach Vaneria has used a basic coaching philosophy which involves striving for proficiency in three primary categories:
(1) Converting around the basket equally with both hands and with proper footwork.
(2) Shooting
(3) Scoring moves that require minimal dribbling.
Using this mindset girls not only improve their skill sets but their understanding of what makes them successful. This past high school season several girls turned their off-season hard work into all-star nominations and the attention of college coaches. This success has led to a growing number of girls joining the program.
