Now onto the next class, sophomores. Sophomores contribute just as much effort as freshman do, and there are many talented sophomores to be recognized in the Bay Area. Skilled sophomores had a chance to experience intense basketball as a freshman, and are now more enhanced and well equipped to compete at multiple levels.
Below is a list of sophomores that are a must-see in the Bay Area:
Annabel Schneiberg- 2022, 5”7′, PG & SG, #23, Lick Wilmerding High School (San Francisco, CA), Olympic Club-OC Elite Varsity Girls
This girl can ball. Really good awareness on the court, and her basketball IQ skyrockets. One of the quickest players in the game and this really assists her amazing ability to score. Annabel is able to dribble past any defender, defenders need to have quick hands against her. Schneiberg averages 14.2 PPG, with a total of 439 points to date for the 2019-2020 season. She has also scored 59 3 pointers this past season with a 42% 3P%. Lick Wilmerding was 10-0 before their season was cut short this past Spring. I have no doubt that Annabel had a lot to contribute to this record. She is definitely a player that is tough to guard, her physicality makes her almost impossible to defend. Not only that, but she also has a great shooting form. Her quick release is phenomenal. I am particularly excited to witness Annabel in action for her Junior, and Senior year.
Darolonie Sykes- 2022, 5”6′, Guard, #5, Ygnacio Valley High School(Concord, CA)
Darolonie is a player you won’t want to miss out on. Ygnacio Valley High School had a 10-0 record this past season and Sykes devoted her skills to help her team reach this record. Sykes averages 13.0 PPG, with a total of 298 points during the 2019-2020 season. She also does a great deal on the boards averaging 4.6 RPG. Sykes is the next level, and definitely a star on the rise to success. Darolonie Sykes is very athletic, and strong-willed when it comes to scoring. She makes shot attempts look so smooth, and her quickness allows her to score easier and get the basket in stealth mode. Darolonie has outstanding offensive abilities and has the athleticism to get rebounds for her team. I’m looking forward to seeing what Sykes brings to the table in the upcoming years.
Maya Pollard- 2022, 5”6′, Shooting Guard, #10, San Leandro High School (San Leandro, CA)
Maya is one of the best shooters in the game, her shooting abilities are incredible. Pollard is a great scorer around the basket and an unselfish teammate. She is always looking to help her teammates score and gives them as many opportunities possible. Maya is a captain on her winning team, with a 10-0 record this past season. Maya averages 11.6 PPG, with a total of 347 points to date for the 2019-2020 season. She also made 83 3-pointers during the season. Pollard has a great basketball IQ, she makes predicting passes look as easy as reading a book. Her shooting really sticks out as well, you can tell she practices on the side, which is what all great players should do. This girl has talent and dexterity. Maya is always running down the court for her teammates and has the speed to dribble past any player. This girl is a star, and her success will only go up from here on out.
Anela Thomas- 2022, 5”8′, PG & G, #15, Saint Mary’s High School (Albany, CA)
Anela Thomas is a brilliant athlete. She is very intelligent on the court and knows the game very well. Her IQ for the game shows significantly when she applies her knowledge when playing. Thomas is very proficient on the defensive and offensive end. Anela averages 12.4 PPG and has accumulated a total of 323 points for the 2019-2020 season. Along with that, she averages 5.4 rebounds per game. I think Thomas is a very physical player on the defensive end. It can be difficult for someone to score when she is defending them. She is a beast when it comes to defense. She is tough on the defensive end but is also strong on the offensive side. She has a long shooting range and can score from anywhere on the court. She can take on any player to the basket and is very aggressive when in possession of the ball. I’m excited to see what more Anela brings to the table for her upcoming Junior and Senior seasons.
Silivia Fonongaloa- 2022, 6”1′, C & PF, #21, Salesian College Preparatory High School(Richmond, CA)
Silivia Fonongaloa of Salesian College Preparatory High School is a star player. She is a very strong center and is a tough person to beat. Salesian led the season with a 10-0 record, and Silivia definitely had a strong part in their success, Silivia might be one of the toughest players to defend, and she has some great power moves under the basket. Not many players can defend her. She has the golden touch when it comes to scoring around the basket. Silivia averages 11.2 PPG and has a total of 313 points to date for the 2019-2020 season. She also averages 6.6 RPG as well. She is a very active player on defense and is always looking to grab a rebound for her team. She is always boxing out, on the offensive end and defensive end. Defenders have difficulty scoring on her because of her magnificent height. Silivia overall is a very intense player, and there aren’t many players like her. I’m excited to see what the future holds for Silivia, she is going to have a rewarding future in basketball.
