Continue ReadingSparta featured seven freshmen during the 2019-2020 season. That did not stop them from finishing the year with a 24-5 record and a 14-2 mark in the Northwest Jersey Athletic Conference. Moving forward, they are in a good position given the youth and talent on the roster.
It begins with Brynn McCurry Brynn McCurry 6'1" | PF Sparta | 2023 State NJ , who emerged as one of the top players in the class. She averaged 16.1 points and 10 rebounds per game. McCurry was a double-double machine in her first season. She was not much of a shooter but could dominate in the lane. When she develops a more consistent jump shot, McCurry will be one of the best players in the state.
Ally Sweeney Ally Sweeney 5'8" | SG Sparta | 2023 State NJ was the second leading scorer for Sparta this season. She was a complete player that could do it all. She averaged over four assists per game and could rebound at a strong level for a guard. Sweeney showed off an elite jump shot and joined Bailey Chapman as three-point threats. Chapman led the team with 47 made three’s. She averaged nearly 10 points per game in her first season and that number will skyrocket over the years.
Together McCurry, Sweeney, and Chapman have formed one of the top trios in the state. Sparta’s Class of 2023 has more names that will emerge as sophomores. Mason Munier played strong minutes for Sparta. She was a key contributor off the bench, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Rylee Munier, Aine Byrne, and Ella Collins are other names to remember for the 2020-2021 season.
When a team has so much youth, it usually takes time to put it all together. That was not the case for Sparta during a 24-win season. They will have plenty of eyes on them. The future is bright for the program and they will be one of the most exciting teams to watch in the upcoming season.
