Obviously, these regions will change into next season but for these stories it was the easiest way to divide players and teams as equally as possible.
We will be writing a series of three stories for each region in the state and the categories are as follows: 2023’s to put on Your Radar, 2022’s who can Breakout, and 2021’s Who Should be Valued by Colleges.
We will continue to go through each region and aim to hit as many players as we can that we haven’t talked about previously. Here are five 2022’s who could be primed for big seasons.
Anna Gossling Anna Gossling 5'5" | SG Johnston | 2022 State IA – Johnston
In Class 5A this coming season, Johnston will be the hunted. And the Dragons know it.
After claiming the state title with a thrilling victory over Waukee, Johnston looks to remain atop the state’s largest class.
Class of 2022 prospect Anna Gossling Anna Gossling 5'5" | SG Johnston | 2022 State IA will be a key piece to that. Gossling started all 26 games a year ago, shooting almost 52 percent from the field with 265 points, 65 rebounds, 35 assists and 30 steals.
She also sank 35 three-pointers, which ranked second on the team. Gossling was a 42 percent shooter from long range and 88 percent from the free throw line.
Nya Mach – Des Moines North
After earning eight wins a year ago, Des Moines North will build around some nice returning pieces. Included in that bunch is Class of 2022’s Nya Mach, the leading scorer last season.
Mach accumulated 223 points, averaging just over 10 per game on almost 35 percent shooting from the floor. She also had 159 rebounds, 26 steals and 22 assists, sinking 23 three-pointers.
Baylie Girres – Council Bluffs Lincoln
Council Bluffs Lincoln went 16-7 a year ago, reaching the regional championship before falling to eventual state champion Johnston.
The Lynx lose several starters from that unit, but return Class of 2022’s Baylie Girres.
Girres came off the bench a season ago, scoring 113 points with 116 rebounds, 20 steals, 17 blocked shots and 16 assists. She made over 57 percent of her field goal attempts and also knocked down 61 percent of her free throw tries.
Lily Roberts – Marshalltown
Marshalltown will feature Class of 2022’s Lily Roberts this coming season after she started 21 of 23 games and scored 110 points.
Roberts also had 29 rebounds, 28 steals and 16 assists, knocking down 13 three-pointers. She made almost 62 percent of her 34 free throw attempts.
Laphina Campbell Laphina Campbell 5'2" | PG Des Moines North | 2022 State IA – Des Moines North
In 16 games, Laphina Campbell Laphina Campbell 5'2" | PG Des Moines North | 2022 State IA racked up 205 points, 96 rebounds and led Des Moines North with 71 assists and 53 steals.
Campbell shot almost 31 percent from the field, over 62 percent from the charity stripe and made 18 three-pointers.
