In the hopes that there will be a girls basketball season, here are a few rising juniors you should look out for in South Jersey’s most competitive conference and arguably one of the best in the state, the Olympic Conference.
Katie Fricker, PG/SG Cherokee: Fricker was a key part of a Cherokee team that went 25-1 in the regular season and 30-1 overall, reaching the NJSIAA Group 4 Final. She has a pure stroke from beyond the arc and has good off-ball movement to open up space for herself to shoot. Fricker has good floor speed and court awareness, especially on the break. As a floor general, her passing is also something to watch out for in the upcoming season.
Mia Robbins, C Eastern: Robbins has significant upside growing into her position as Eastern’s primary center. Her dribble penetration into the lane is fantastic for a big and is physical going to the bucket. Robbins’ strength down low is something to watch out for and she can also drive from the point and pass too, making her a versatile asset. Watch out under the rim too as she’ll be Eastern’s primary rebounder come this season.
Tireya Wyatt, G Winslow: Wyatt is going to be Winslow’s go-to scorer along with Hanifa Neal, a rising senior guard. Her specialty is from three, with a smooth shot and can shoot in tight pockets. When she gets on the break, there’s no stopping her at the rim, and she’s a pesky defender, finishing second on Winslow in steals. She’s stepping up into a much bigger role with Adriyanna Jennings graduating and expect her to fill that role well.
Sara McShea, SF/SG Paul VI: McShea was Paul VI’s top rebounder last season for a team that went 24-3 overall. Not only does she box out well, she also creates space from beyond the arc and has a pure touch. Off-ball, she’s active and puts herself in positions to score or draw contact at the rim. With Abaigeal Babore Abaigeal Babore 5'7" | SG Paul VI | 2020 State NJ graduating, McShea is going to be relied on more from three, so expect her range to increase this season.
Nile Miller, PF Paul VI: Miller is not only Paul VI’s best shot protector at the rim, but she is very agile on the defensive end. Her height is to her advantage, especially when it comes to swiping the basketball, and she puts her body on the line on the court, a physical player for sure. Also, on the break, her height is on display as she is able to get open down low for easy baskets.
Stay tuned as the 2020-21 season creeps closer for more player updates and more projections.
