Not only that, but they get to learn from the upperclassmen who have already become very experienced in playing at a competitive level. For freshman at the Division 1 level, they really have it all. Listed below is a list of freshman that are highly skilled, and are able to compete at an exceptionally high level.
Geriah Bradley- 2023, 5’4”, PG & SG, #0, San Leandro High School(San Leandro, CA)
Geriah Bradley is able to score on any defender. Best of all, she is able to create space for herself. If she has a defender up against her, she is able to create an open shot without any issue. One thing that I noticed is that she is always running down the court on the fast break, and 99.9999% of the time she will make the lay-up on the fast break. Geriah averaged 5.2 PPG and scored a total of 156 points during the 2019-2020 season. Her free-throw shooting average was 54%, averaged 2.5 APG, and 2.7 RPG. There is really a lot of room for Geriah to greatly improve her statistics. She is competitive and seems to learn from her mistakes throughout the game. Any player that is easily coached, and learns from constructive criticism is a great player, and Geriah Bradley has the potential to be an amazing player.
Mari Somvichian- 2023, 5”4’, Guard, #21, Oakland Tech High School(Oakland, CA)
Mari Somvichian is small and mighty. I have talked about her before, and she really is a stealthy player. She comes out of nowhere with her insane three-pointers. She shoots the lights out for the majority of her gameplay. Oakland Tech is a very successful high school team, and Mari only makes their team better. She also can drive in the paint very easily. Her self awareness is phenomenal, she not only creates opportunities for herself but for others as well. She made 50 three-pointers during the 2019-2020 season. She also averaged 6.0 PPG but scored a total of 203 points total this past season. She had a 32% three-point percentage and had a 58% free-throw percentage. Mari is small, but should not be underestimated when on the court. She is a feisty player and truly deserves the recognition. I can see Mari becoming even more of a star for her up and coming high school seasons.
Erin Sellers- 2023, 5’5”, Guard, #3, Oakland Tech High School(Oakland, CA)
Erin Sellers, also apart of the amazing Oakland Tech High School Varsity team, is an up and coming freshman. She is lanky and athletic. Sellers is also very fast, she is a tough player to defend. Not to mention, when she is dribbling at full speed she is always in control. Players have an issue with dribbling at full speed and are able to make a play. The best players are able to do this. Erin and her Oakland Tech team had a 10-0 league record, and alongside teammate Mari Somvichian, they were a dynamic freshman duo. Erin averaged 6.9 PPG, and scored a total of 222 points during the 2019-2020 season. She also averaged a 65% free-throw percentage. Erin has attempted a decent amount of shots this season. I believe her shooting form can definitely improve throughout the rest of her high school career. Sellers shooting percentage can definitely improve. Erin is a hustler and will never do anything at 50, 75, or 90%. Everything will always be done at high intensity and 100% effort. I admire Erin’s ability to adapt on the court, she has the ability to become one of the best players in the Bay Area.
