There is always a lot of good basketball in Shelby County, north of the Dayton area. This year, teams like Fort Loramie and Sidney will be heavy with talent as Loramie finished last season unbeaten with several top players returning. Sidney went winless two years ago and won their division last season.
While the stars are bright in the county, there are also some hidden gems waiting to break out this season. Here are five who you may want to keep an eye on this year.
Lonna Heath, 5-6 2022, Fairlawn
This kid according to her AAU coach John Coffee has been one of the most improved players on his roster this summer. She has taken her biggest weakness (ball handling) and has worked relentlessly to improve it. She can already shoot the ball well from the perimeter, along with scoring at the rim. Her defense is improving and I look for an explosive year for Lonna this coming season.
Kate Sherman, 6-1 2023, Russia
Post player who is strong and physical and an aggressive player. Not afraid to make aggressive mistakes which was beneficial for her as a freshman while learning different things at the varsity level. Started part of last season as a freshman, and has worked hard in the offseason to get better with her footwork both in the post and the perimeter.
Samantha Reynolds, 6-0 2021, Sidney
She comes into the season one of the more decorated sleepers in the county. Although she is a two-time all conference player, she is starting to ascend at the right time. She is a good rebounder and she uses her length and athleticism to disrupt the passing lanes and protect the rim. She has also improved her face-up game and that will make her hard to stay in front of this season. She has the tools to be a next-level player.
Kiara Hudgins, 5-7 2024, Sidney
In addition to Reynolds, another kid who will open some eyes from Sidney is the incoming freshman who is a game-changer and will take Sidney to the next level for years to come. An ultra-quick player who has speed and advanced handles which makes her dangerous in the open floor. She can create off the dribble and has a knack to attack the paint. On defense, she can harass her opponent and that fits right into the style of play for the Jackets.
Carmen Huecker, 5-6 2022 Botkins
OK so she is not really a sleeper if you are a league team who has to play her, but she is a player who should improve her stock this season after a solid sophomore season. She is a complete guard with good handles, solid court awareness and a good basketball IQ. Carmen has good range out beyond the arc, and can create a shot for herself or her teammate.
