4 Thoughts:
Warren Harding is absolutely loaded – it’s going to be tough for someone in the AAC Red to knock them off this winter. Player of the Year Faith Burch returns after averaging a huge double-double, a year ago. She is joined by the team’s leading scorer in Kamarah Bender, as well as swiss-army knife Diamond Phillips – another double-digit scoring option.
Canfield has their own talented bunch returning to try and knock off Harding. Led by Marissa Ieraci, Canfield will look to switch up defenses and force the game to be played from baseline to baseline. Talented underclassmen Alyssa Dill and Summer Sammarone join the mix as athletic perimeter players who can effect the game with the ball in their hands or without it.
Howland is another team that has high hopes. The traditionally strong program returns 2023 dynamo Courtney Clark who averaged 11 points and 7 rebounds a year ago. Clark is joined by leading scorer Alyssa Pompelia and her classmate, Jamie DeSalvo – an outstanding player and athlete in her own right. Senior Gillian Powell will need to have a strong final season if Howland wants to get back in the league championship mix.
Fitch and Boardman – although they may not be at the top of the league – both have some good players to build around. Emma Bartlett will lead the way for Fitch, as she is joined by Mya Mcnevin. Both girls will need to score more points this winter. Boardman returns Maria Torre, Raegan Burkey, Emma Mills and Emma Tokarsky – no double-digit scorers, but a collective group with a lot of experience.
3 Big Games:
Canfield @ Harding on January 6th
Howland @ Canfield on January 20th
Harding @ Howland on February 3rd
2 Fun Facts:
The Red tier of the All-American Conference has been very balanced over the years. In the past ten years, a number of different teams have taken their place atop the league at the end of the year. As we mentioned earlier, Harding won the league in 2020, Austintown Fitch in 2014 and 2019, Canfield in 2013, 2015 and 2018 and Howland in 2011, 2012, 2016 and 2017.
Burch, Phillips and Bender combined to average over 42 PPG, 25 RPG and 10 APG last year for the 22 win Raiders – quite the trio.
