It’s never too early for too-early-season. With fall sports and school underway, it’s only a matter of time before the winter sports season is upon us.
With that in mind, here’s a look at some of the top point guards in Class B:
[player_tooltip player_id="98709" first="Carlee" last="Sieben"], Grafton
Sieben is the engine for a Grafton team that will be ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in the preseason this winter after reaching the state title game last March. She averaged 19 points and better than five assists as a junior while earning all-state honors. She’s the consummate floor general who can score from all over the court, guard multiple perimeter positions and her ability to control the game is as high as anybody in the state.
Kenzie Hughes, Thompson
Hughes earned all-state honors as a junior, averaging 21 points, six rebounds and five assists last year for a Grafton team that reached the Region 2 final. One of the state’s premier two-way players, Hughes sets the tone for the Tommies on the defensive end of the floor, and has grown into a dynamic scorer who drives quality offense.
[player_tooltip player_id="98728" first="Madelyn" last="Schmidt"], Kidder County
Schmidt was an all-state guard as a sophomore, and averaged nearly 18 points and five assists as a junior for a Kidder County team that was a contender in Region 3. She’s one of the top perimeter defenders in the state, putting ample pressure on the ball and triggering transition scoring opportunities for her team, and her ability to get into the paint and either finish or make plays makes her one of the toughest covers in Class B.
[player_tooltip player_id="200284" first="Megan" last="Roob"], Richland
Roob has been a dominant scorer for the Colts for a couple years now and has the ability to keep her teams in games on her own. She’s a terrific perimeter shooter who can fill it up from the 3-point line as well as anybody, and her quickness and length serve her will when it comes to getting to the paint and making plays.
[player_tooltip player_id="206291" first="Madi" last="Wilhelmi"], Beach
Beach should be considered a contender in Region 7 this winter and Wilhelmi is arguably the best point guard in the region. She’s a terrific facilitator who can control the tempo of a game as well as anybody, and her ability to balance distributing to her teammates with getting her own shot sets her apart from a lot of players.
