While South Florida prospects have the ability to hit tough shots, having a strong defensive skill set is paramount to winning. You can always control the intensity, effort and execution of your defense.
If a player hits a fadeaway jumper or long 3-pointer…tip your hat. 9/10 though I believe you can simmer a good shooter with strong defense.
Now that my monologue is complete, I would like to highlight some of the players that personify elite defensive talent.
Tatyana Wyche Tatyana Wyche 6'2" | C American Heritage | 2021 State FL – American Heritage (Plantation)
What can you say about Wyche that hasn’t already been said? The 6-foot-3 Gator commit is a cemented superstar here in South Florida. Wyche averaged 17.0 rebounds and 3.9 blocks per game for the Patriots en route to her third straight state championship. In total, Wyche grabbed 476 rebounds and rejected 110 shots. You would have to argue that Wyche will go down as one of the best players in South Florida in recent memory. Mic Drop.
Taliyah Wyche Taliyah Wyche 6'2" | C American Heritage | 2021 State FL – American Heritage (Plantation)
Again, what can you about Wyche that hasn’t already been said? The 6-foot-3 Gator commit is a cemented superstar here in South Florida. I don’t like repeating myself but its true! Wyche averaged 14.0 rebounds and 3.6 blocks per game. In total, Wyche grabbed 392 rebounds and rejected 101 shots. What I will say is the presence of both twins alone is a nightmare to game plan against. The future SEC stars make an impact on every possession, regardless if a stat is implied. Mic Drop No. 2.
Alancia Ramsey Alancia Ramsey 6'0" | PF St Thomas Aquinas | 2023 State FL – American Heritage (Delray)
While the Stallions have Wisconsin commit Jordana Codio Jordana Codio 6'1" | SF Montverde Academy | 2022 State FL in the fold, 2023 Alancia Ramsey Alancia Ramsey 6'0" | PF St Thomas Aquinas | 2023 State FL is another player to lookout for. All Ramsey did was average 10.7 rebounds and block 1.3 shots per game in her first season with the Stallions. Any player that can make an impact like that out of the gate is bound to be special. Moreover, Ramsey collected ten or more rebounds in 11 games. Against Oxbridge Academy, Ramsey grabbed 15 rebounds, including a whopping 11 on the offensive end.
Taylor Blackshear – Benjamin
Like Ramsey, Blackshear is another player with a bright future. The 2023 shooting guard averaged 7.8 rebounds and 3.8 steals per game for the Lady Bucs. Against Jupiter Christian, Blackshear grabbed a season-high 17 rebounds and recorded nine steals. The Lady Bucs went on to win 22 games with Blackshear playing a big role. On the season, Blackshear collected 219 rebounds and swiped 106 steals.
Sinah Mueller – North Broward Prep
Opponents might want to think twice before throwing up a shot against Mueller. The 5-foot-11 forward swatted 3.8 blocks per game while grabbing 6.4 rebounds. Mueller rejected an absurd 11 blocks against Ransom Everglades and nine shots against Berean Christian. Therefore, Mueller keeps points of her opponents board and is a big reason for the Eagles victories. In total, the current junior rejected 78 shots and grabbed 135 rebounds. She will look to improve on the Eagles 9-13 record from a season ago.
