That means that those who were anticipating the start of the 2020/21 high school girls basketball season will have to wait at least another month for games to start.
Prep Girls Hoops is going to fill that time with player previews and profiles, looking at some of the best talent in the state, including the Greater Middlesex Conference.
This article is a continuation of a multi-part series, looking at some of the best juniors to look out for in the conference this season.
Maya Fenyk, PF/C Woodbridge Academy: Fenyk was the impact inside presence for Woodbridge Academy last season, averaging over 10 rebounds per game and recording just over four blocks per game. She was as dominant as they come on the defensive end and she still was flirting with double-double numbers the entire season. Fenyk dominates the paint on offense too and this season, with everything running smoothly, she should easily average a double-double and will get tons of playing time on this younger Woodbridge Academy team.
Jaylin Locasio, PG/SG/SF Piscataway Vo-Tech: Locasio emerged last season as one of Piscataway’s best perimeter shooters, finishing second on the team with 22 made three-pointers in 19/20. With senior Tamia Lane having graduated in the spring, Locasio is really the lone option for Piscataway, though expect her to not take all of the load. The perimeter shooting will be dispersed throughout the team, but Locasio will be that go-to scorer in clutch time and is the engine to run the team from a guard standpoint.
Henna Thakkar, G/F Woodbridge Academy: Thakkar was a great complimentary player to Fenyk for Woodbridge Academy last year, averaging 10.7 PPG and almost seven rebounds a game. She’s in the same position as her junior teammate as someone who is going to flirt with double-double stat lines this season. Thakkar has some range, and it will be interesting to see how often she decides to shoot the three come January after only making four last season. Knowing her success in the paint, she doesn’t need to rely on it, but more success on the perimeter will add another level to her game.
Jamyiah Alston, PF/C Piscataway Vo-Tech: How Locasio helps run the engine at the point, Alston is that but in the middle, down low for Piscataway. She averaged a double-double last season, 11.7 PPG and nearly 12.6 RPG. She made the most of her time on the court, playing in just 17 games on varsity last season. In those 17 games, however, she out-blocked the next closest person by 59 and averaged five blocks a game. It’s an insane stat for someone who is going to dominate next season and build off her stellar sophomore campaign for Piscataway.
Morgan Miranda, F/C Mother Seton: Miranda was primarily featured at that power forward/center role for Mother Seton last season and she played excellent when she was on the floor. She’s one to dominate in the low post on offense and when she’s fed the ball, she’s bodying up someone to get to the basket or at least draw contact on her way up. Her aggressive style of basketball plays well on Mother Seton, who was one of the best teams in the Gold division last season and with Miranda being featured more regularly this season, should be just as good if not better.
