With the calendar nearly turning to December, practices are heating up and there really is a sense of competition without there being any competition yet.
Prep Girls Hoops continues its look at the New Jersey high school girls basketball scene, looking at juniors to watch in the Shore Conference, going to the B Central & B North division.
Jenna Dacquel, PG Mater Dei: Dacquel is a really well-rounded guard and someone who, despite the competition on Mater Dei, stands out. She made the most of her minutes last season, making plays on both ends of the floor. On offense, she was penetrating the lane, creating excellent shot opportunities, and connecting from deep, really showing off her range. On defense, she doesn’t let off the dribble and plays her opponents close and tough. Dacquel plays with grit and tenacity, just a higher level of inner competitiveness.
Madison Lopez, PG Mater Dei: The first thing that jumps out when watching film on Lopez is her passing ability. She moves well off-ball, but that doesn’t mean that she’s the last person to touch the ball after she gets open. If she finds a better scoring opportunity, she’s dishing the rock to a teammate, but if she has the look, she’s confidently shooting it. She doesn’t get backed down on defense and she boxes out well in the paint to haul in rebounds, a multi-dimensional player on both sides of the ball.
Ava Wilson, PG/SG Asbury Park: There is a lot to like about Wilson, someone who has a knack for scoring and an ability to really disrupt the tempo of the game on defense. She’s athletic and geil on the floor, able to get up and down the court fast to start a fast break or track down her opponent, stopping them in their tracks before getting a good scoring look. Don’t overlook Wilson due to her 5-2 frame; she can ball and is a playmaker for Asbury Park.
Marquita Cordero, SG Keyport: Cordero made the most of her time on the court last season as Keyport struggled. However, she was one of the bright spots on the team and what will be an impactful junior class this season. She’s going to let it fly if she gets open and she shoots the ball well. She really moves well off-ball and on defense, her presence will be felt more, creating more turnovers and bad shot attempts for the opposition.
Megan Cahalan, PF/C St. John-Vianney: Cahalan is just the inside presence this St. John-Vianney team, the returning No. 1 team in the Shore Conference, needs. She really patrols the paint well, making it uncomfortable for anyone trying to score on her. She doesn’t allow those backdoor cuts or leaves anyone near the lane uncovered. If they get in, she’s got a great opportunity to get her hand on the shot and turn it around for a fast break the other way.
