Even with the delayed start, there really is no telling what will happen this season, but there is a lot of anticipation and excitement for what is gearing up to be a great season of basketball.
Prep Girls Hoops has been previewing the talent across the state and that continues in a multi-part series, looking at some of the best junior standouts in the Tri-County Conference, beginning in the Classic division.
Torence Gallo, SG/SF Wildwood: Gallo is going to be an emerging three-point specialist for Wildwood, who finished last season 24-6 and 15-2 in conference games and is looking to improve upon that. Expect to see her playing more in that small forward role as there is a crowded roster of guards on this team. Her versatility will shine as someone who can play that forward position and should be a starter or at least one of the main scoring options off the bench for Wildwood. Gallo, with more playing time expected this season, will be seeing a massive uptick in her season stats and her defensive presence should strengthen as well.
Catriona Galvin, PF Pitman: Galvin and fellow sophomore forward Alaina Villari are going to be utilized more in and around the paint this season due to the departure of senior center Delaney Drummey. She has the ability to really dominate for Pitman and it starts with that paint presence. She hauls in rebounds, scores down low and actually recorded over a steal per game last season. Galvin is not only someone who can crowd the lane, but she’s also agile and has great court awareness to position herself well to create turnovers.
Leniyah Harris, PF/C Clayton: Harris shows a lot of potential on a Clayton team that really struggled to make things happen during the 2019/20 season, just a 4-19 record for the Clippers. She bounced between JV and varsity last season, getting some game time late in the season and she used that time well. She plays aggressive and is agile on the defensive end on the boards. Her varsity sample size was small, but Harris is going to be someone heavily relied upon for Clayton, a senior-heavy team who has lost nearly 70 percent of their offense coming into this year.
Imene Fathi, PG/SG Wildwood: Fathi will be leading Wildwood’s three-headed monster this season of her, senior guard Leah Benichou and guard/forward Jenna Hans. Hans will slot more into that forward role, but Fathi is going to be leading the point for this team and last season was her breakout year, leading the team in points and assists, averaging in double-figures for the Warriors. She has all the traits you’re looking for in an elite guard: passing prowess, the ability to score at will, balanced shot selection, three-point efficiency and fantastic defense. Fathi nearly averaged three steals a game last season and her ceiling is only rising for Wildwood.
Gianna Ettore, PF Clayton: Ettore is the second-highest returning scorer for Clayton and her numbers are going to skyrocket with her and Leniyah Harris patrolling the middle this season. She has the ability to flirt with double-double averages this season as the Clippers will experience a few bumps in the road to start the season in January, but will definitely turn some heads. Ettore is a strong presence in the paint and plays aggressive and with physicality. More game experience will translate into much more success.
